Al mentioned running into his Army buddy, Floyd, who was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany at the same time he was. Floyd too had married a German girl from Karlsruhe, and they have a young son, Patrizia’s age. I listened with increasing interest and suggested a get together with that family. A few days later, we met Floyd and his very pregnant wife, Karin, and their little son, Floyd, Jr. Prior to our visit, Karin had experimented with hair coloring, but something went wrong; her hair turned out fiery red instead of dark blond. She worried about getting her natural dark brown hair color back, and for now wore a kerchief over her head. We spoke German and reminisced about the entertaining places we frequented in Karlsruhe, her hometown, and I told her of my studying there at the Banking College. My hometown, Bruchsal was just 15 miles up the road from Karlsruhe, but our dialects had some minor differences and we laughed about and had fun with it. I liked her immediately, and that day, we forged a friendship that lasted a lifetime. One evening Al came home with two fellow soldiers in a truck, and they unloaded a big awkward looking metal box. To my surprise, it was an older black and white television, a floor model, as they called it, with huge rabbit ears for an antenna. After setting up the TV in our living room, the screen was rather snowy and they kept adjusting the rabbit ears to get a picture. Gerald, the older of the two looked questionably at his

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

The Bertuli Story It is known that passing stories down from one family member to another keeps the memories alive. The same can be said for those who have served in our military. Getting personal information from someone who has experienced that part of life can be so important in keeping those memories, both good and not-so-good alive. In interviewing Mr. Leonard Bertuli, a United States Marine from Mark, IL, my partner Seth Carlson and I learned more about his life before entering military, his experiences while in the military, specifically during those taking place during the Vietnam war.…

During his 11 months of his career, Hymas had lost his best friend and disobeyed orders to kill two German Military prisoners of war, but what he had found next was not expected, he had discovered the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He had engaged in a firefight with German Soldiers guarding the camp, Hymas and three other machine gunners blew through the razor-wire fence and captured or killed all of the guards.…

In the book An American Soldier in World War I, editor David L. Snead focuses on George “Brownie” Browne and his experience in the 117th Engineering Regiment from 1917 to 1919. Snead uses some of the over one hundred letters written by Brownie to his fiancée, Martha “Marty” Johnson, to tell the story of World War I through the eyes of a soldier. The compilation of letters reveals the day-to-day routine experienced by the American troops from preparation to discharge. However, Snead does not simply publish Brownie’s letters, but instead pieces it together with the broader context of the war to record an important piece of American History. An American Soldier in World War I was written by Snead to examine the training of American soldiers and…

Although Ishmael Beah was very fortunate to escape Sierra Leone, millions of other poor, innocent civilians were not lucky enough to flee their war-ravaged homeland. Similarly to the first two highlights, the next two passages work together to display the progression of damage that war takes on the country of Sierra Leone, specifically its capital city of Freetown. A passage from pages 146-152 clearly highlights Freetown as a busy, religious, and magnificent city filled with bustling streets of extravagant cars, tall buildings, countless mini-markets, cheery street vendors, and the enormous Cotton Tree, a historic landmark of Sierra Leone. By writing this passage, Beah strategically explains what Freetown meant to Sierra Leone, so he can later prove his main idea and reveal how war damaged and affected his home country and its capital city.…

Life during World War II was a time unlike any other. American author, John Steinbeck, gave up a life of fame and riches to follow troops around the Eastern hemisphere and document their journeys. Though there are many sources a person could go to for information about the war, Steinbeck’s account goes into great detail about what life was actually like for an American solider during the war. On his journeys, Steinbeck recorded many aspects of the war that would otherwise go unnoticed. Throughout Steinbeck’s travels, he records accounts of how soldiers adjusted to military life, how life continued during the war, and how the soldiers reacted during combat.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

I’ve lived my entire life in Indiana, as have my parents. My mom and dad were raised close to Monroe and went to Adams Central, where they met and fell in love. They ended up moving north to Fort Wayne where they had my sister and I. We began our schooling in FWCS, but we moved farther north to the tiny town of Huntertown later, which led to my sister and I switching to NACS for my high schooling and her middle and high schooling. Due to all of the events that have happened here in Indiana throughout my life, and due to most of my immediate family living in the area, I have a desire to continue living and working here.…
