As we see with many Congress men and women, often times they only try to please others and not themselves. This has thus made them lose themselves, until they can try to regain themselves out of office. Thus, the theme of The Great Gatsby is that, sometimes people try to change themselves or others to become satisfied with their life and in the process lose themselves. We are going to look into many reasons why The Great Gatsby clearly shows this trait. First let’s talk about Mr. Jay Gatsby one of the main characters. Wilson to kill Gatsby later on. If Gatsby had been driving in the first place many of the huge plot events at the end may never have happened. We saw many people change here and it showed their true character I the end. A fifth reason that the book shows this theme is the billboard outside of Mr. Wilson’s garage. The bill board outside of Mr. Wilson’s shop clearly showed this in a big way. This showed that no matter what you do, many can still see behind your disguise.
Standing behind him Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg….

This is shown with Mr. Wilson referring to it as God and saying that you can’t get passed the Lord on things of this nature. If people had been able to see through disguises, Gatsby would never have been close to getting back with Daisy. It showed that Daisy was not able to see that Tom and Gatsby were both lying to her, but she eventually saw that Tom was lying in the end of the …show more content…
It shows that Gatsby is trying to achieve and get something that is nearly unattainable.
“If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby. “You always have a green light that burns all night….” Page 98
If he went for something else he wouldn’t have to change, but since he went for Daisy, he has to change in order to get what he wants. He sees this green light as the Holy Grail, and no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t reach it. This just shows that Gatsby tried to change himself to receive the Holy Grail. In Conclusion, we saw that many politicians lose themselves in their work, and may never regain themselves, we saw with many of the characters in The Great Gatsby. So we saw that the theme of, Sometimes people try to change themselves or others to become satisfied with their life and in the process lose themselves, was shown many times in the book.
