The novel, The Glass Castle, takes place from approximately 1957 to 2005. From the beginning of the novel readers are taken to present day New York, where the author and protagonist is living. A few pages in, Walls converts the novel into a flashback on her life growing up which alters the date to approximately 1957, when Walls is born. Since the novel is a memoir, readers are able to infer the time and date based on when the author was born, as well as when the book was published. The novel takes place in an assortment of diverse communities throughout the United States such as Phoenix, Nevada, and Arizona.
