Internet Fame Can Last Forever
In her essay “The Flip Side of Internet Fame,” Jessica Bennett tells about problems that can happen when people post online about other people. She describes these problems by using examples of suffering caused because of comments and videos that were posted on the Internet. She also writes about sites that permit people to post about others anonymously. Bennett uses quotes from authorities on online problems and includes a brief history of public shaming. The point of the essay is that people should be careful about posting personal information about themselves or others on the Internet because this type of fame can be very hurtful, is difficult to control, and can last for a long time.
This essay begins with an incident that began in 2002 to a chubby, young man in Canada named Ghyslain Raza, who filmed himself acting out a fight scene from a “Star Wars” movie using a light saber. His performance was awkward, and many people thought it was funny because it was not supposed to be funny. About a year later, another student at his high school found the video and posted it online. It went viral almost instantly, much to Raza’s embarrassment. In a short time, there were hundreds of postings of this video, some enhanced with music and other effects. It was viewed by millions of

In Colonial America, people who did not follow religious rules religiously were locked into stocks in the town square where others could humiliate them. Other public punishments in America at this time included cutting off the hands or fingers of thieves or forcing people who committed adultery to wear a large, red “A” on their clothes. This type of public shaming has not stopped, either. Recently in San Francisco, a judge sentenced a mail thief to standing outside of a post office wearing a sign about his

Tyranny of the Mob” by Joel Stein focuses on how the internet is being used as a gateway to hate and that the people who have access to it have normalized the negative attributes. This article shows personal examples of how the web is becoming a vile link in the lives of humanity. Leslie Jones, a co-star in Ghostbusters said “They started sending me threats that they were going to cut off my head and stuff they do to ‘N words.’ It’s not done to express an opinion, it’s done to scare you.” Stein uses this personal example to show that the article’s main idea is how these trolls are threatening the lives of others through social media and how they are effecting the victims’ life.…

During the 17th century in the Colonial period early Americans didn’t have any suited rules, or laws to protect themselves from criminal behavior. During those years Americans developed their own mechanisms to then enforce the rules of society as well as punishing offenders. Today those are taken over by the police, courts, and corrections. Before any former laws were established in the United States, Americans relied on religion and sins to improve people’s life. That’s why many of their Colonial crime codes were from the bible such as blasphemy, profanity, and sacrileges of the sabbath which were highly punished.…

Julie Zhuo’s essay, Where Anonymity Breeds Contempt, does not effectively reach content providers because of Zhuo’s lack of consideration to the provider’s own experiences on the topic of trolling. Throughout her essay she argues that content providers need to take control over trolling by not allowing anonymous commenters, watching over comments, and asking users to report trolls. By following these steps, Zhuo believes that trolling will decrease. Trolling is when someone makes hateful or rude comments online- usually anonymously. Zhuo’s essay was published in November of 2010 during a time when Facebook and Twitter were the most popular social media sites.…

Jeff Jacoby’s essay “Bring Back Flogging” made me truly think about the United States Justice System. Although I was originally appalled at his notion to bring back public whipping, I began to realize the fatal flaws our criminal system has. Although bringing back Puritan punishment may not be the best step for America, the path we are taking now with our criminals is not only wasting money but truly not helping anyone. In colonial times, the Puritans needed some system to keep order in their community.…

Social media has became a place where some people live a different life. They create lives where they’re someone they aren’t. For example, in the essay, Turkle talks about a girl that has a abusive alcoholic father. In a game called Sims, she creates the same situation, except in the game she is both physically and emotionally strong (Turkle 437). The shaping of lives happens a lot on sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.…

Public shaming has been around for thousands of years and has a been a tremendous part of human history. In The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne has committed adultery and is forced to wear the letter “A” on her chest for all of eternity. Public shaming, similar to what Hester was sentenced to, still happens today consequently making public shaming an alternative punishment. However, public shaming should not be apart of the judges repertoire as it affects the criminals way more than intended. Having the government and legal system come up with the punishment is pushing the boundaries on the Eighth Amendment and privacy.…

In today’s society, where social media is part of everyday life, one can see the comparison to Plato’s allegory of the cave. The cave holds both the captives and the puppeteers as prisoners. Social media being the cave, holds both people posting on social media and people scrolling through social media captive. Have you been stuck in the cave or have you seen the true reality of life? People that post on social media are able to portray themselves in whatever way they please.…

In a society where everyone is expected to project their personalities on social media for all to see, it’s often hard to know what someone is truly like, and if the part of them we see on one platform is an accurate representation of their identity. Outside sources affect various different parts of your identity, which come together to make a complex whole you. These sources, such as the media and society, law enforcement, and more and more importantly, the Internet, have a lot of power over our personal identities and which parts of ourselves we present to them, which has positive and negative effects. Being a person of color in America is not easy. Because of how beauty is presented in the media, the larger society holds uniform standards…

In this selfie culture we have today many teens has two different lifestyles such as the internet persona and their physical human body.
