Summary Of The Film 'Photograph' By Spike Jone

In the movie entitled Her, directed by Spike Jonze and composed by Arcade Fire. The scene entitled "Photograph," is an original underscore piece. In the scene Theodore, the main character and Samantha an “artificially intelligent OS” have been experiencing problems getting emotionally involved (Buchanan). Samantha is constantly aware that she lacks physical attributes, which has motivated her to compose a piano piece titled "mental photograph" that she claims is a representation of a photograph of them together. As Theodore listens to the piece a sense of happiness evokes him while a mosaic of their life together capturing their most treasured memories is being shown.

While listening to the music I envisioned a love story that was encountering a period of anguish; however, once the piano began to play the mellow yet beautiful music, the despair would begin to disappear while the love story would begin to unwind and reveal pictures of their past memories, bringing back the sense of love. After watching the scene, I believe the director along with the composer were able to entirely capture the essence of the music. Watching it with the scene helps guide the listener to envision what the director was trying to convey with the music. The music and the scene are not the only aspects that establish a sense of love and happiness, the minor dialogue and moments of silence help allow the scene to fully come together. With the line “Well I was thinking we don’t have any photographs of us and I thought this song could be like a photograph, captures us in this moment of our lives together,” said by Samantha captures the meaning of the song.
