Whether they are friends or not should mean nothing. That is precisely what Vasudeva did for Siddhartha on his path to enlightenment. On page 91 of Siddhartha, Vasudeva helps Siddhartha cross the river, and once they reach the other side the two of them talked into the deep of the night. Vasudeva opens his home up to who was at the time was just a distant companion. “Then welcome, Siddhartha. My name is Vasudeva. You will, I hope, be my guest again today and sleep in my hut and tell me where you come from and why your lovely clothes are such a burden to you.” “Siddhartha told the ferryman about his background, about his life, and how today, in that hour of despair, he had seen it pass before his eyes. He talked until deep into the night. Vasudeva listened very attentively.” In the passage above, we can see that Vasudeva really does care for this person that he hasn’t seen in over 20 years. Vasudeva sees something in Siddhartha, he sees that Siddhartha can reach enlightenment just like he had once done himself. With this in mind, he listens intentively to Siddhartha and takes him under his wing. We well placed foreshadowing that Vasudeva will teach Siddhartha about humility and appreciating all he has.
