Primarily, Jack uses the Giantess’s kindness to his own advantage. She provides him with dinner and tells him if he behaves, the Giant will reward him with fortune, and even tells him about their gold egg-laying hen. Jack takes her kindness for granted and forces her to hide him from her husband. Instead of behaving and earning the money honestly, as per her advice, he steals the Giant’s bags of gold and does not even thank her. He uses her as a pawn in his crime and never apologizes or mentions her again, proving he is a con man and has no feelings of guilt about his crime. Secondly, Jack slaughters the Giant and cuts down the beanstalk once he gets what he wants in order to cover up his crime. Even with the threat of being roasted or clubbed by the Giant, who was only protecting his property, or even apologizing and returning the stolen items, Jack has no fear or regret about his theft and murder and keeps it happily. He is so absorbed in himself that he hurts others with no shame. Finally, Jack realizes how successful he is at stealing and how easy it is to get into the Giant’s castle, and uses this to his advantage. He sneaks in the castle when no one is home or when the Giant is sleeping so he can steal his things, establishing how Jack is merciless and proud of his skills.
