The poem begins with a direct speech from the speaker establishing one specific day in time where one has an epiphany of what one’s purpose in life is. In the three next lines, a symbol is introduced as the “voices”. The “voices” represent other people, mainly those who are part of one’s life but are not beneficial to one’s personal growth. These three lines reveal the true intentions of those voices as they keep saying the wrong things and shifting one’s mind in a different direction. The next four lines utilizes metaphors to emphasize one’s perseverance.…

After being torn away from my life by the influenza, I came to relate with this poem by Thomas Moore. As he describes, even though I am sad now, the memories of my past manage to lift me up from the darkness surrounding me. The poet canvasses two periods, past and present, and two kinds of memories, childhood and present. The first stanza begins with memories of childhood, and the last ends with present circumstances, with the theme of death present throughout.…

The poem and the story develop the same themes but they come across to a person in different ways. In the story a hobo gets help from a man but later doesn't appreciate it. The story starts off when a man comes along to a hobo who hasn't slept for two days and hasn't eaten for three days. The man offers to take him out to pick and find him a place to sleep. The homeless guy starts out eating with great manners, but then he starts to get ungrateful because he feels the man is just using him and just trying to learn about him.…

In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost he talks about life and he uses plants as a analogy. In line one, he talks about how nature's first green is gold and it also means that when a baby is born it's important. In line three it talks about it again and shows repetition. In line four Robert talks about how being young and a plant’s flower doesn’t last forever. All of the analogies in the poem remind the reader that life is short.…

“Broadway Melody” by Frederick Seidel is somewhat humorous but realistic impression of elderly people. I can honestly say that I laughed after reading this as well as slightly being moved by the beauty of it towards the end. I find it a unique poem, because of the subject matter and context, as well as the cruelty and the offensiveness of the tone with the speaker. In addition, In my interpretation of the poem the main focal point revolves around the idea of ageism in which everyone in this world will face some day, and how some people may view ageism as a sorrowful way to spend the remainder of their lives, by only enjoying life as much as your physical body allows you. Frederick focuses on the ugliness of age and the decrepitly that comes…

    5. The natural history of moral: In the word of Nietzsche, the present day moral sentiments in Europe is as diverse, irritable, subtle as the “science of morals” is still raw and awkward. Today’s philosophers lack the historical outlook and they try to justify morality their own morality. Nietzsche states that people are different from the way they think, and they possessed.…

Describing “time stills in my mind like unbroken snow” represents the eternal but passing memory of this first love. His “fear of first love as first things fail” conveys the regret of the persona. Simultaneously the persona accepts the relationship has ended. He transitions through the poem from saying “time does not pass” to “time passes as the seasons pass”. Meyers makes a point that first love is beautiful and timeless when you’re in it, but it will come to an end eventually.…

Naturally the past seems to fade from the forefront of our minds as new times encroach. All that remain are brief fragments of a previous time. Langston Hughes’ “The Weary Blues”, and Robert Frost’s “Directive”, offer a limbo between the past and the present. Modernity is inevitable, yet the past still lingers in the shadows. While their styles may differ, both poems provide a vague depiction of times lost.…

This is further demonstrated by the author through his ability to make us feel the child’s missed opportunities and this is clearly represented by both the father and the son’s letter towards the end of the poem. Moreover, the importance of a paternal influence in a child’s life is finally highlighted at the end of the narrative during the son’s letter when the child is writing twenty five years on in his life portraying the pain he feels to missing out on life lessons that his father failed to teach him. This really stands out to the reader when the grown man refers to himself as “ a little boy trying to heal himself twenty five years later.” I believe that this shows even time cannot heal the price of a father being there during childhood and the author really emphazises this in this quote by making us sympathise for the child and showing us how important a father is for a young…

Robert Frost strongly emphasises nature’s power and strength in its original state compared to mankind’s weakness in his 3 main poems: “Acquainted with the Night”, “Birches”, and “Desert Places”. This contrast between nature and humanity is mostly highlighted in “Desert Places”, when the narrator describes a scenic view by saying “And the ground almost covered smooth in snow, but a few weeds and stubble showing last”. Frost demonstrates the existence of mankind in nature, through the presence of “stubble” which suggests man’s interference with the natural world. Frost seems to criticise humanity, as he portrays it as destructive and brutal towards the world, as it leads, quite literally to the death of nature. However, Frost also emphasises…

In the poem, “Their sex life” by A. R. Ammons, it would seem, at first glance, that it is almost too simple in nature, like it was written for Twitter-Lite, in which one can only use 30 characters or less. Possibly it is a modern day Haiku, two lines, fourteen characters, four syllables. Taken as a whole “One failure on top of another”, metaphorically speaking, the poet can be talking about anything. Career, relationship, stock picks and yes, obviously, sex.…
