Summary Of The Facebook Sonnet By Sherman Alexie

Social media has been a controversial debate for several years now, rather it be the topic of violence, brain development, and social skills. A modern day poet, Sherman Alexie gave his point of view on the topic. In the poem “ The Facebook Sonnet” by Alexie there is a strong use of satirical irony or sarcasm, hyperbole, and pathos to empathize how the use of social media is taking over everyday communications between people.
When you have a social media page you connect with people of your past and of you present. Whatever you post they see and vise versa. Alexie uses this fact to shape the opening of his poem. In the first stanza Alexie stated “Welcome to the endless high school reunion.”(Alexie) By placing “welcome” and “endless “in the same sentence he begins to set the tone of sarcasm, because “endless” tends to have a negative connotation while “welcome” has an uplifting connotation. The contrast one another which makes it sarcastic. In the second stanza Alexie presses the issue of continuing childhood.” Let’s exhume,” dig up our childhood, “resume,” continue our childhood,”and extend,” our childhood. The purpose of this arrangement of words is to cause the reader to reminisce about their childhood before social media took over. He further persuades the reader to reminisce by stating. “ let’s all play the games that occupy the young.” He wants the reader to become in touch with their inner emotions and find their inner child so that they can understand the author's point of view on the situation of social
