After reading the article “The Code of the Streets” by Elijah Anderson I can see how cycle of violence continues to go on in poor inner city communities. Since people pretty much have to defend themselves and their family since the police doesn’t help them. As well as, to really fit among the group they have to create their own self-image and they are told as kids to be tougher. In the article, it states parents are at times the one who make their kids tough because they would punish them if they are not tough. For example if a child if came home upset for losing a fight the parent would tell their kid, “Don’t you com in here crying that somebody beat you up; you better get back out there and whup his ass. For example, if a child grows up in a place where foul language is frequently used than they will mostly likely curse when they become older. As well as, a child’s personality is formed with socialization. Personality is used to refer a person’s typical patterns of attitudes, needs, characteristics and behavior (Schaefer 77). Personality is affected by socialization because when a child who grows up in a poor inner city neighborhood they are imposed from a young age to become tough so they get into fights to gain respect and wear some expensive item or stole an item from a person which they consider as a treasure. The reason they wear an expensive item is because of the willingness to defend it. For example, if a child had an expensive jacket and someone tried to take and the other person one, it would become their trophy which they would wear as a sign of respect and to mock the other person. Gender role also played an important role. Gender role refers to expectations regarding the proper behavior, attitudes, and activities of males and females (Schaefer 85). In this society because women is less likely to use deadly weapons such as guns in a fight, as well as, they usually get a male relative to do the fighting for them. This causes the society to become male dominated
