The Lemon test has been extremely influential, as it aids in clarifying a complicated entanglement of religion and legislation. In addition to the clarity, the popularity could be attributed to the ease of applicability. Not only is the lemon test pertinent to state funding, but also pubic school curriculum. On example is Kitzmiller vs. Dover (2005). This case questioned the ability of schools to teach intelligent design (ID) as a scientific alternative to evolution.…

In order to combat this issue, the Netherlands currently begins Comprehensive Sexuality Education at the age of four, yet it is not what may be assumed. Four year olds are obviously not being taught about contraceptives and abortions, instead, thanks to their age-appropriate curriculum, sexuality education begins by teaching about love and healthy relationships. It is also not just for four year olds, it continues throughout school by, for example, teaching eight year olds about gender stereotypes and body image or teaching eleven year olds about contraceptive use and sexual orientations. Whereas America’s idea of Sex Education revolves primarily around abstaining from sex, sex education in the Netherlands focuses on having open and honest conversations about love and relationships. Surprisingly enough, this approach seems to be better suited for helping adolescents form their identities and providing critical information for later on in life- whether it be recognizing an abusive relationship or understanding the risks of having unprotected…

How sex education, or some might say lack thereof, is being taught in Texas public schools continues to be a major topic of debate, driven by high teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease and infection rates. Texas sex education curriculum follows an “abstinence-only-before-marriage” approach, and lacks a more comprehensive program to educate teens on disease and infection contraction, pregnancy, condoms, and other concerns which all youth have the right, and need, to know about. However, many are concerned that an in depth program will lead to higher STD and STI contractions, thinking a comprehensive curriculum will promote sexual activity among teens. The opposite is actually the truth. Other states with programs that expand beyond…

Sex: we see it everywhere. In magazines, on billboards, on television, in movies – everywhere. Why, then, if sex is everywhere, being displayed for everyone to see – if sex is what sells, will nobody talk about it? Why are we desensitized to seeing sex everywhere but wildly uncomfortable discussing it? The root goes back to what society teaches about sex: not a whole lot.…

In the quote, “Although much improvement in this area is obvious, there are groups of teenagers from culturally deprived homes who never seem likely to receive adequate sex education. Part of the answer lies in better teacher-training as well as for more radical teaching aids in the form of films, filmstrips, and illustrated pamphlets.” From popline.org, describes how we might have sex education everywhere around all the schools but that teachers…

Sexual Education has been encouraged to be a part of public school education since the late 1800’s. It is a program that is supposed to help young adolescents understand their body, promote abstinence, types of contraception, the risks of engaging in sexual activities, and how to prevent diseases or pregnancy. However, many parents fight this program because of their beliefs that teens should stay abstinent till marriage, and learning about sex will increase their urge to have sex. Depending on what the state requires to be taught and what a school district wants, a student will either receive one of the two styles of sexual education. The two styles are comprehensive and abstinence only.…

Many believe parents do not sufficiently educate their children about the topics of parenting and sex education and feel that schools need to provide teens with training for adulthood and having it mandatory to complete parenting classes. Having such classes and also being required to take a sex education class would help students realize the importance of sex education and being properly trained for parenthood. Parents often believe sexuality, family planning and parenting needs to be taught at home, however, having a sex education class and a parent training class as a required credit in high school would help prevent future child abuse and neglect, gain crucial parenting skills, understanding of child development and help prevent teen pregnancy…
