In the essay, “The Case Against College”, Linda Lee suggest that even though America is obsessed with college, college may not be for everyone. Not every high school graduate is college material and hands on skills are needed for various types of jobs, skilled people are needed to fill all types of jobs. There is evidence gained from research conducted by educators, which shows high school students learn differently. In fact, there are 4 distinct types of learning. The first type of learning is visual learning. “Students with a visual learning style, absorb information by seeing it in front of them and storing the images in their brains.” (education.com) The second type is auditory learning. The author states that even though a large majority of students go on to attend college after high school only 27% actually go on to obtain a degree. This means that there are 73% of students who are making a living without a college degree. The author refers to a study that was conducted that states “only 26 percent of students who began 4 year colleges obtained a degree in six years.”(Lee, “The Case Against College” Family Circle 12 June 2001) I believe that there is a need for students who are properly trained in a trade like plumbing, refrigeration, welding. Hands on training that existed before the days of college, proves that kinesthetic learners don’t have to read a ton of books and write a ton of papers to be able to perform a specific task very well. High schools should look for opportunities to recognize students who would be better suited for a hands on learning environment and create learning opportunities for those students that do not require a college. This study talked about a statistic that said,” College graduates earn more money than non-college graduates.” Is that really the case? The author pointed out some well-known people, “Bill Gates and Walter Cronkite” who are very successful without a college degree. She also indicated her hair colorist made $300,000/year and she didn’t have a college degree. (Lee, “The Case Against College” Family Circle 12 June 2001) The author also pointed out that her son, who struggled along the way has found a career that makes him happy and provides a decent income. I have some evidence of my own that you do not have to have a college degree to be successful. Neither of my grandparents have college degrees yet they have had successful careers. My grandfather was an over the road truck driver and my grandmother worked at our local school as a teachers’ assistant. They didn’t retire as millionaires but they had very satisfying careers and full lives raising a family of 5
