Summary Of The Book 'The Giver' By Lois Lowry

You Be You The Giver by Lois Lowry is a book about a boy, Jonas, who becomes the new Receiver of Memory and faces challenges, that causes him to make some tough decisions about how he wants to live. The society that he is living in has been the same since he was young. But now that he is older and is seeing it as a totally different place, he decided that the town is a place where people live as if nothing is wrong but the whole town really isn’t a happy place that Jonas wants to live in. His society has no feelings, emotions, and memories because the Community of Elders decided that they didn’t need it in the world. Jonas didn’t agree and decided that he wanted to do something about it. As I read this book, there was a theme built up, it was being an individual means knowing when to conform or rebel. So he was pretty much normal compared to everyone else, right? Well, that all depends on your idea of normal. In this community, everyone is supposed to be equal as kids. Everything is in black and white, everyone has the same rules depending on their ages, everyone tells the truth. Here is an example of how strict this community is. “You may lie” (68) is a quote that Jonas was struggling with because all his life he was told what to do, how to act, how to talk, and now after all of these years, he can just blow off all of those rules like they never existed. this follows the theme of individuality because Jonas finally receives his assignment, but now he is already struggling with the thought of being and individual. This is sort of where the theme of individuality starts to develop. Jonas is just receiving his assignment and has so much ahead of him that he didn’t know about yet. But in the future you will see how he develops
