Summary Of The Book 'Football Champ'

I read the book, “Football Champ”, by Tim Green for my book talk assignment. The realistic setting of this book is cities across the United States. The main character of this book is Troy White. Throughout this book, Troy is a team consulter for the Atlanta Falcons. His knowledge and predictability have reporters questioning whether he is cheating or not. He has to battle through these cheating allegations and help the Falcons through the NFL playoffs. Troy attempts to explain that he isn’t stealing plays from the opposing teams, but a reporter named, Peele, doesn’t care and manipulates his words, putting it all into an article for the company he works for. In the book, Peele, the reporter, asks for an interview with Troy. In that interview, he asks Troy about his talent for …show more content…
In the beginning of the book, Seth says, “Welcome to the NFL. They don’t have to write the truth. They just want to sell papers”(22). In the climax of the book, it says, “Troy read all the way to the end in the futile hope that somewhere in the story, Peele would reveal the truth the way Troy had explained it”(108). In the end of the book it says, “Seth stabbed a finger at Peele so hard the reporter flinched. ‘...person, I guess I have to call him,’ Seth said. ‘even though he’s a lying rat, is trying to ruin my NFL career’”(167). These three quotes explain how lying will get you nowhere in life is the main theme of this book. From the start, the reporter, Peele, wanted to sell a good story. He had an interview with Troy about his talent to read offensive plays and Peele completely changed those words to make it sound like he was cheating. This also could’ve been revenge against Seth, since they had an altercation in high school during a football practice. He tried to get away with it, but was caught lying and was fired from his job as a reporter. This goes to show that lying will never get you anywhere in
