Study Guide Questions
Beginning of Chapter 2:
1. The narrator learns from the other characters that Ethan Frome is about 52 years old, he is stuck in Starkfield, Massachusetts to take care of his sick wife Zeena, and he has been in an accident about 24 years ago and has a scar on the right side of his face. Knowing this information makes the narrator want to know more about Ethan.
2. Ethan’s house is an old, falling apart New England farmhouse. The part missing is a ‘’L , a deep-roofed adjunct usually built at right angles to the main house, and connecting it, by way of storerooms and tool-house, with the wood-shed and cow-barn.’’ This strikes the narrator as …show more content…
Mattie sets the table with colorful dishes and used Zeena’s pickle dish, Zeena’s favorite wedding gift. Unfortunately, the cat jumps on the table and the dish breaks. The dish symbolizes Zeena’s heart being broken by Ethan and Mattie.
Chapters 6-8
1. The morning after Ethan spent the night with Mattie, he felt ‘’irrationally happy,’’ and ‘’their evening together had given him a vision of what life at her side may be like.’’
2. When Zeena returns she plans to fire Mattie and hire help. At first Ethan was shocked and angry. Zeena’s true motive for dismissing Mattie was to split Ethan and Mattie up.
3. Ethan’s two courses of action was that he can either go west with Mattie and leave Zeena at the farm, or he can stay with Zeena. The force that makes the decision is that Ethan might not have any money left for himself.
4. Ethan visits Mr. Hale to ask again for the advancement in order to run with Mattie.
5. The author suggests that Mrs. Hale is being sympathetic to Ethan, and tells him that Zeena has an important place in Starkfield. I believe Mrs. Hale is aware of Ethan’s predicament at the time because what she says makes Ethan rethink about his plan to trick Andrew Hale into giving him money.
