The book that I will be doing is And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell this book talks about two male penguins that are in love. The two penguins Silo and Roy wish to have a family like the other Penguin families. They realize that they can't because they are different from the other family penguins. But their desire for a family was the same. Silo and Roy make their own nest as the other family penguins, they saw how the family penguins were having their baby penguins, but they didn't. The zookeeper notice that Silo and Roy wanted to be parents, so he help Silo and Roy by putting an egg that needed to be cared on the nest of Silo and Roy. Most of the people consider that this kind of topics should not be show to children at a younger age, but it's important to exposed these topics about same-sex parenting because right now we see more and more people having same-sex parents. There are relevant statistics that show that “as many as 2 million to 3.7 million U.S. children under age 18 may have a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parent, and about two hundred thousand are being raised by same-sex couples” (Gary J, Gates). The statistics prove that more people of same-sex are becoming parents, because society is becoming more flexible. If adoption between same-sex couples was bad, there wouldn't be this high statistics of children that are raised by same-sex couples. In this book they have a family of penguins that consist of mom and dad, but they also present another family that consist of dad and dad as well. This book helps children see that family are very diverse, they can consist of two mother or two fathers, etc. Children of same-sex parents feel more integrated when they don't feel discriminated by other children, that’s why this kind of books are important because it help students view the different family structure. Children will learn that every family is different, but that love that each family has towards their children is the same and basically this is mention in the article of Gary J Gates.
