Summary Of That Summer

Day 5: setting
In the middle of the book That Summer, (where I last stopped reading) it started off with Haven at her house waiting for her father to pick her up and take her out to dinner. Haven’s dad did this every Thursday, so Haven expected it. They went out to a fancy Italian restaurant called Vengo, and they saw many people including Sumner. After eating Italian food and catching up with Sumner, Haven’s father took her home. When she got home, she walked into a fight between Lewis and Ashley. They all still live in Lakeview, her dad just lives in a different house with Lorna.

Day 6: character
In the middle of the book that summer, the part before Ashley's wedding, Lewis’s family was introduced into the story through a dinner. They were supposed to talk about the wedding, but Lewis’s family was filled will hatred as they heard about Ashley and her family. When Ashley got home from the dinner there also was another new character in the story. The “duck dog” was the neighbor's dog that was called the “duck dog” because it barked like duck. Sumner came back into the story as well. He now works at Vego (the Italian restaurant Haven and her dad ate at). As he caught up with Haven’s family and told them all what was happening in his new life, one of Haven’s dad’s friends came up to them to talk about sports casting.

Now, there is mainly problems in Haven’s own life between mixed feelings, and flashing back to good times with Sumner, that she can't forget. I think that Haven is on the verge of going crazy about everything because she is just holding her emotions

Gary Soto’s vivid imagery and religious allusions recreate an event where sin and guilt leads him to reflect upon his actions as a six-year-old child. In the beginning of A Summer Life, Gary Soto reveals that he has a religious background by quoting that “he knew enough about hell” and that he “was holy in almost every bone”. In addition to his religiously influenced statements, he also states “angels flopping”. The recurrence of allusions from the bible in the introductory passage emphasizes that Soto knew about God and therefore, the consequences of sin even at a young age.…

A work of fiction that I read for pleasure and found to be very inspiring and influential to me is Summer Ball, by Mike Lupica. This book is the story of a young kid, Danny Walker, who loves basketball more than anything else in the world. Danny had recently led his travel basketball team to the national championship and now is spending his summer at Right Way Basketball camp in Portland, Maine. While there, Danny plays with the best players in the world from his age group, but he is different from everyone else as he is the smallest. In basketball, height is a huge advantage, and therefore, Danny is at an extreme disadvantage.…

The brisk trek through rough wilderness had taken its toll on the portly fog of a man. Now wheezing, he bowed low to prop up his arching frame on a knee high boulder on the side of the path. He watched with passive intrigue as giant sweat droplets fell to earth. Each one making a crater in the previously undisturbed soil carpeting the seldom used trail leading up to the Burbank overlook. He wanted nothing more than to feel the wind blow across his puffy face when he got to the top.…

“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, is a science fiction short story. Bradbury included a one of a kind setting, superior characterization, and an ending that allowed readers to create their own, using their imagination. The setting was unique and I would have never thought of an imaginable place like Venus. Margot is a shy and frail young girl and we notice this when Bradbury describes that she is an “old photograph” and talks like a “ghost.” Over the years, good short stories and novels have been transitioned into movie adaptation.…

INTRODUCTION When I discovered that I had to write a dissertation as part of a history honours course at the University of North London I naturally turned to the library and archive of my employer: the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Britain. The library is a treasure trove of fascinating archives and artefacts recording Quaker history over a period of 300 and more years. Discussions with the Head Librarian, Malcolm Thomas, narrowed the immense range of dissertation possibilities to two: Quaker diplomacy around the building of the Berlin Wall and relief work in Russia during the revolutionary period. These conversations took place before German reunification and it was apparent that many documents held by the governments of Federal…

In the book, The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan, the main character Magnus and the Sword of Summer (or Sumarbrander, in Norse) had a relationship that changed through the storyline. In the beginning they didn’t know or trust each other, but later in the book they developed a strong bond of friendship. Magnus and the sword first met when Magnus pulled it up from the bottom of the Charles river to fight the fire giant king Surt. At first, Magnus and the sword were total strangers to each other. Magnus had no idea what the sword was capable of, and the sword knew nothing about Magnus, either.…

Throughout Jean Rouch’s filmic career he experiments with cinema, pushing the boundaries of ethnographic film, showcasing a range of styles. Chronicle of a Summer embarks on the simple journey of asking strangers if they are happy in order to explore how camera’s change behavior. This film epitomizes Rouch’s exploration of cinematic truth, however, I am left questioning if it is the camera or Rouch who provokes his subjects into performance. Rouch’s exploratory career can be tracked through his two films, Les Maitres Fous and Moi, un Noir, released only 3 years apart but very different, displaying his adventurous, transformative filmic style. Compared to many other ethnographers, Rouch is not concerned with capturing the reality of the lives…

In this short story there are many examples of when someone on Venus suffers because they do not contemplate the consequences because of their previous actions.
