The song consists of thirteen stanzas, the chorus of the song being sung three times. The first three stanzas showcase the speaker’s choice between religion and love. The song is about the sexuality of the speaker affecting the way they are being treated by society, especially the church. This can be indicated through the lyrics in the chorus of “I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife, offer me that deathless death, good God, let me give you my life”. The lyrics continues with the speaker viewing their lover as the sunlight and the lover as well demanding sacrifice. It continues with the taking down of those who do agree with this kind of love, and the taking down if it will fulfill the speakers hunger. This can be seen through the lyrics of, “My lover's the sunlight, to keep the Goddess on my side, she demands a sacrifice, to drain the whole sea, get something shiny”. Once the chorus occurs for the second time it continues with the speaker stating that no matter the sin, nothing is sweeter than it. The speaker will only be cleansed once the ritual is performed.
