Throughout many stories, the main characters and the settings can make up not only the theme, but also the structure of the story. By revealing the main characters of the story, brings about better understanding and knowledge of how the people are, and how the people act. By presenting the reader the setting of the story, it provides us detail about where, and when the story takes place which lets us know what the time period is like and what the place was like. In the story “Sweat”, by Zora Neale Hurston, the main characters, Sykes and Delia are discovered with very diverse characteristics. Along with the qualities of the characters being a substantial part of the story, the setting, which is a small town in Florida, is shown and revealed as a place that will play a big role in the outcome of the story. She always seems to be a woman who takes pride in her work of being a washwoman. A quote from Zora Neale Hurston says,” She was a wash-woman, and Monday morning meant a great deal to her”(1022). Delia takes pride in her work and never fails to provide for her and her husband, who does nothing with his life. Even though she is the provider for her family, her husband, Sykes, is a cheater and constantly has something negative to say to Delia. Delia is a woman who takes the constant negativity and still goes along with her day as a hard working woman. Sykes always complains about Delia bringing white peoples clothes in their house, but he is okay with cheating on his wife, which is something that is very thoughtless, considering his wife provides
