Thumb’s Down
Strong offensive language is widely used by everyone whether it’s when texting, or speaking to someone and it conveys a strong and emotional message. In addition, there has been a small number of authors who have used it in a story such as Cristina Henriquez when she wrote “Micho Alvarez”. In her short story Cristina used profanity to channel her emotions towards the mistreatment of Mexicans and what they go through. However, I would not recommend it. In my opinion she shouldn’t have used profanity firstly due to how it can take the reader’s attention and they’ll be more focused on the profanity than the point you are making. As an alternative, he voices his emotion through a manipulation of words which he used to his own advantage. As a result, he managed to show his writing in a new light and so on to write a story with a significant impact on its readers displaying just how vulgar language is not needed. In her story Cristina input’s “These people are listening to the media, and the media, let me tell you, has some fucked up ideas about us.” Instead of using “Fucked up” she could’ve said despicable or loathsome yet she decided it was necessary to incorporate a massive amount of vulgarity. To me she has so much potential, However, I don’t see her using it. Instead of playing around with words to get what she wants she decided in taking the effortless way

This week’s readings discusses different aspects of the Mexican war. In “Mexican Views of the Mexican-American War discusses the origin of the war between Mexico and the United States, it states “To explain then in a few words the true origin of the war, it is to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it”, the weakness that it’s referring to is the Mexican government. Like we discussed on Thursday, Mexico has always had a chaotic government that contributed the loss of Mexican land. It can be lead to think that if Mexico had a secure government, the loss of the land wouldn’t have happened. Mariano Otero’s “Considerations Relating to the Political and Social Situation of the Mexican Republic in the Year 1847” relates to the previous reading because he explains the Mexican government and weak army contributed to the loss of…

There has been a request from several people to remove books from the curriculum such as Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye due to some inappropriate language. Although I am aware that foul language is not acceptable inside the walls of high schools, I cannot assist with that decision. Many people out in the real world use that language on TV shows and movies, social media, with friends and family, and definitely in numerous books! A couple of books with a few choice words should not harm anyone. Most likely, the high school students will already recognize all of them.…
