In this essay that we were forced to do, we will tell you everything that we could come up with in Chapter 5 (Joe Flacco’s number. *cough* *cough*). Chapter 5 of un*Spun touched base on many lies that companies have come up with to get you to buy their product. It also taught us the importance of searching up the product/company and finding the facts. Because, at times, the easy route isn’t the route you should go. A couple months later, the man is billed $200,000 in fines because he was caught working with an illegal corporation. People lie to evade consequences and extended explanations; in other words, lying generates a smoother way forward because it lacks both confrontation and shame. Stephanie Ericsson, in her essay, The Ways We Lie, argues “When someone lies, someone loses”(1) through various examples and situations. In contrast, both Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and John Steinbeck’s East of Eden provide numerous examples that dispute her claim.…

In her essay, “The Ways We Lie,” Ericsson shows the different ways one can lie for protection. These ways include dismissal, ignoring the plain facts, and others that do not include telling a lie per se. A Father in a church was molesting children in the 1960’s and the ecclesiastical authorities moved him to a new church, rather than acknowledging his actions (Ericsson 2). The authorities lied to no one, yet to Ericsson that still classifies as a lie. Her essay makes the reader aware of how he lies everyday…

Deception is most successful when there is a grain of truth blended into the lie. If a large portion of the facts of a lie is perceived as true (or thought to be valid), individuals are more likely to explain away any inconsistencies as they emerge. In a way, individuals are blinded by the deception. Science writer Maria Konnikova notes “We con ourselves as much as [conartists] con us, because we supply the missing links, we tell ourselves the story that we want to hear,” (Hutson, 2016). Con artists use this strategy to mislead and cheat individuals to gain what they want; be it possessions, money or power.…
