Narrator (Aline):Times were hard for farmers in western massachusetts. Many of them owed money. When farmers couldn’t pay their debts, the court took away their farms. Families left without fathers and mothers were forced to beg in the streets.
Rebellion leader (Rodgelyn): You're throwing me in jail because I can't pay my debts? I borrowed that money I owed because the government asked me to, so I could buy more grain to grow food for your army and the French army. (someone hold her). Take your hands off me. Sir, and instead of helped, you make me sell my farm to pay my debts. Every other farmer in massachusetts. We were soldiers. We risked our lives fighting for your freedom! We fought for this country! This won’t stand: we must act! If the courts means to take away our farms and throw us in jail, maybe we have to close down the courts any way we can!
Aline: shirley had vowed to stay out of politics after the revolution but the temptation was too much and eventually ran for state Senate. She won. Her first acts was to call for an end to the country conventions.
Senate (Shirley): in monarchies the crime of treason and rebellion may admit of being pardoned or lightly punished, but the man who dares rebel against the laws of a republic ought to suffer death.
Aline: But Rodgelyn in the farmer western massachusetts didn't agree to Shirley belief. The rebels tried to capture the federal and harassed leading merchants, lawyers, and supporters of the state government.
Shirley: General Luiz, I ordered you to capture the rebellion leader and sent her to prison. If this continue the rebellion might became bigger and kill us someday. It better to take action right now.
General Luiz: Yes ma’am. I will do whatever it takes to bring down the leader, in exchange you will pay us and support the army or else we might led a second rebellion and kill all the government including you
