Summary Of Sharon M. Draper's Copper Sun

"Let your yes be yes and your no be no. May you be protected from evil, and may you live to a ripe old age. If you come in peace, we receive you in peace. Heroism is the dignity of our ancestors, and, in their name, we welcome you." This is a quote from the book Copper Sun written by Sharon M. Draper. The book is told in two points of view, one in Amari’s point of view and the other in Polly’s point of view. Amari is an African American girl who was captured from her hometown in Africa and shipped to America to be sold into slavery. Polly is a white indentured servant who works to pay off her family’s debt. This gives two different perspectives of the story that you would not get if there was only one point of view.

It was a large, almost empty room with a table, lamp, 1 bed, and a mat on the floor. Amari began to talk in her language and Polly told her to stop talking in that language and she wondered how she was going to be able to make her civilized. She began to teach her English as soon as they were settled in and learned that she already knew some English words. She was teaching Amari that her name was Myna not Amari. Then two slaves burst through the shack doors, their names were Teenie and Tidbit. Tidbit looked to be about 3 or 4 and Teenie looked as if she was his mother. Teenie then shows them to the kitchen and makes them a meal and they are introduced to Hushpuppy the dog. Polly then tells Amari, Teenie, and Tidbit that her parents died and how she lived a tough life, her dad was thrown into prison and both of her parents died of smallpox. She became an indentured servant because her old master sold her to Mr. Derby to pay off her family’s debt, which the old master got the money from her being sold and paid off most of the debt. Even though most of the debt was paid off, she still has to work for another 14 years to pay the rest off. I think this would be a way different chapter if it was in Amari’s point of view. If it was in Amari’s point of view I think that the chapter would probably just talk about how Amari felt when all of this is happening and how she is adjusting to her new

McPherson avows that even though the soldiers of both sides originated from the same motherland, it was their disparate dogmata’s that instigated them to endure belligerence and foster the extrication of their country. In his novel, McPherson derives distinctive tones and deposits them in the profound and abysmal chorus of a budding nation divvied amongst itself. In addition,…

I have been learning about the effects that humans have on the environment since elementary school. We were taught "reduce, reuse, recycle", and to turn off the sink while brushing our teeth. It has never occurred to me until reading these past week 's readings that humans were having such an effect on the earth that it warranted a whole new era: the Anthropocene. John McNeil was an author in both of this week 's readings, and I felt his style to be an practical one when communicating with his audiences. In his book, Something New Under the Sun, I felt I was better able to connect with what he was saying because of his use of "personal examples" from the various countries.…
