Sam and have both lost someone that we care very much about. At the beginning of the book Sam’s wife dies when she is in a Burger King picking up fries for a little picnic they were going to have and he is devastated. That’s what happened to me, a couple of years ago in a span of 1 month I lost my dog by having to put him down and my grandpa who was struggling after hip surgery. “Five years after losing Amy, Sam still identified with those Crow warriors who couldn’t bear life without their loved ones.”(West 8). Just like Sam it was hard for me to move on from both my grandpa and my dog because they were very important to me and I cared for them very much. Basketball is life. We both have a passion for the game and we both love to learn more and reflect back to the past and watch old games and learn from legends. Basketball is life. He also has a passion to succeed and be competitive every day and that’s how I am. I feel his pain of losing and I always want to win and nothing diminishes my competitive spirit. Basketball is life. The last part of how I connect with Sam is the fact that he was running away from his wife’s death and how he secluded himself from a lot of people and the whole world as well. I felt that way after my grandpa died and I didn’t really want to talk to anyone until during a poem type book we had to create in 8th grade I made in memory for him. Sam has that happen to him when he talks about it with Dianna about the death of his wife and he gets a little jump back into his step. I can connect with Sam and this is a reason I enjoy this book so
