Summary Of Rodman Philbrick's Freak The Mighty

Improved Essays
Freak the Mighty, a book now recommended to classrooms around the world, is written by Rodman Philbrick, and takes place in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Maxwell is the main character, and the book is mostly about what he is remembering. Max is both dyslexic and illiterate, but is rather tall and strong for his age. Kevin, the other main character, suffers from Morquio Syndrome, a ridiculously rare and also rather dangerous form of dwarfism (earning him the nickname “Freak”, due to his bell-shaped chest and small height), although is very intelligent and is never afraid to display such knowledge. Kevin cannot walk very easily without assistance, but can crawl on all fours rather quickly. At first, when Max meets Kevin, Kevin doesn’t display a want to set a good first impression, but when Max helps him get an ornithopter from a tree, they become close friends, despite them being near polar opposites in many ways (personality, capacity for learning, and physical ability). Throughout their friendship, Maxwell learns many new, useful, and trivial things about the world around him (such as how to write) from Kevin, whose only practical method of transportation outside of his home (other than a car or other large vehicle) is riding on Maxwell’s shoulders (much like a piggyback ride). Max and Kevin also go through …show more content…
The reason Freak the Mighty is such a good book is that the book slowly builds up, and the climax is a great and unusual twist to the book. However, it also has a sort of second climax. When you would expect the book to end, the mood quickly flips, which is a neat addition nearly all books lack entirely. Therefore, I think that anyone, even those who don’t like to read, should read Freak the Mighty, with its many unique features and a wide variety of themes that can be taken from the

Freak and Max needed each other for that short period in their life. Stated from the text, on page 31, Freak made fun of Tony D and his gang by calling them “cretin” which stalled the gang from almost killing them. If Max were alone at that point, being as small inside as he is, it would not end well. Freak uses his smart ways and makes fun of them and that really helps to make more time for them to escape. Also, on page 81, Max states “If I don’t know, then Freak will tell me and he’ll say it in a way I can understand, which is a lot better than Mrs. Donelli can do.” That’s really nice of Kevin because Max has a learning disability and to do that is so generous.…

Have you ever seen two drastically different friends become close? In the book, “Freak the Mighty”, Kevin (Freak) and Maxwell (mighty) are completely different from each other both mentally and physically, yet they become great friends throughout the story. In the novel “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick, the theme is that people can become friends regardless of differences and societal expectations. The author communicates this theme by using hyperbole.…

In Timothy McCall’s Brilliant Bodies (a source I use for my research project), he looks at courtly fashion during the Renaissance: “This essay explores and interprets the ways in which lords achieved the brilliant clothing and bodily adornment that confirmed signorial status in the eyes of their peers and subjects. Fifteenth-century courtly values of expenditure and display such as splendore (splendor)—the Latin verb splendere means to ‘shine, be bright; to gleam, glitter, glisten’—betray the contemporary significance of radiance.” (McCall 446) The essay isn’t particularly arguing one thing or another — it simply accepts that radiance was an essential part of Renaissance fashion and then provides multiple examples to prove its point. McCall…

Residential school, a gruesome institution that includes rape, torture and abuse. Residential schools have been around since the 19th century. They were created to assimilate aboriginal children into Euro-Canadian culture, and to essentially strip them of their native culture. In both the poem, “Monster” by Dennis Saddleman and the novel, Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, the authors go in depth on the problems with residential schools. Saddleman explains how residential school obliterates native culture, while Boyden explains how the characters horrible experiences, ironically change them for the better.…

Stigmatized by pop culture and modern society, individuals suffering from physical disabilities are often labeled as abnormal. Katherine Dunn’s novel Geek Love challenges this stigma by creating a family comprised solely of “freaks” who display physical disabilities alienating them from the norms of society. To create this family of freaks, parents Al and Crystal Lil Binewski conceive their children while taking a concoction of narcotics—a practice frowned upon by society and medical experts alike due to the increased probability of birth defects. Abandoning their children who appear “normal,” the family raises those born with deformities as performers in their travelling carnival operation—the Binewski Fabulon. Star of the show Arturo Binewski, born with flippers rather than hands and feet, leverages his popularity as a performer in the Fabulon in order to gain power over his family and the audiences he generates.…

In the novel, Monster by Walter Dean Myers three themes are explored: race, justice, and A.V.R (appearance versus reality). One of the major themes and the one This paragraph talks about is A.V.P. There are multiple examples of this, but one I found really good was on page 1 “When I look into the small rectangle…….” The small rectangle being a mirror “I see a face looking back at me but…… It doesn’t look like me”. This is an appearance versus reality because to Steve, the main character of the book, the appearance is he doesn’t think the face he sees in the mirror is him but the reality is it is him.…

Max has a carefree attitude due to his father leaving him however when Ishraqi leaves he develops the emotional side of his personality which is a positive situation, considering he was wasting his potential. Another opposite characteristic is how Max and Ishraqi has grown up, growing up in Iran has made Ishraqi feel as if she has to be careful, it has made her apprehensive that if she does something wrong it will have tremendous consequences. Max on the other hand has grown up in England where you have freedom of speech and that has made him do whatever he wants when he wants: “Dan stood at the door of the bus, glaring at Max. "You can't bunk off, he objected. "we've got a math assessment today" Max shrugged.…
