RUNNER ANALYTICAL ESSAY PLAN:
INTRO: Robert Newton’s novel ‘Runner’ explores the ruthless streets of Richmond. Through the main character Charlie Feehan, we see how many critical and hard decisions he makes which is vital for survival in the slums of Richmond.
BODY – 1
T- In order to survive and provide for his family who is suffering from deep poverty. Charlie has to settle on the hard choice to skip school and become a runner for Mr Squizzy Taylor. After Mr Feehan passing away, Charlie and his family have lost their main source of income. Charlie had to step up and be the man of the house.
E –After Mrs Feehan disapproves the job as a runner. Charlie still goes behind his Mas back and work for Squizzy Taylor. In this way, he can earn enough

One night as Charlie and Nostrils were doing one of the Squizzy late night jobs. Barlow’s gang hold up Charlie and Nostrils. In the critical moment, Nostrils trips and is caught. In the moment Charlie escapes. Charlie watches behind a bush, Barlow’s gang cruelly beating up Nostrils. He feels guilty and so annoyed at himself for leaving Nostrils to be beaten up. Charlie finally has the time to visit Nostrils, and that’s when Charlie realises what a true friend he has… After winning the mile race Charlie repays his debt…
E –“Ladies and gentleman I give ya the Heath and Feehan timber company’’ Charlie starts his own timber company with Nostrils. He puts Nostrils name first in honour and respect of such a loyal friend.

L - Within the book, I find that friendship is one of the main themes in this book. Charlie makes the choice to be friends with Norman and is one of the best choices he had made.
Each day Charlie and his family try their best to live out of what they can. Life was a struggle for Charlie but all that Charlie needed to keep him happy was the encouragement from his friends and family. At the end of the book, Charlie matures and grows into a man.     Instead of running for enjoyment or work, he trains hard for the Ballarat Mile and with the help of Mr. Redmond he successfully wins the race, however he didn’t win without any effort, the amount of hours Charlie spent down at Yarra Park or at the beach is outstanding, all of the hard work he put in definitely paid off.
