According to Michelle Tucker and Tian Oei (2007), groups have the advantages of more cost effective treatment and the ability to work with a greater amount of people. Group work benefits clients through offering group support, experiencing group cohesion, and providing opportunities of usefulness, as members can participate as co-therapists to each other. With its cost-effectiveness and noted effectiveness in treatment outcomes for many sources of psychological needs, group counseling is can be an optimal choice for…
In addition, through individual therapy they could learn the people, places and things that trigger their impulses. Once the client starts working on themselves, their family and spouses should be included to restore trust, understanding and work through any trauma that they may have experienced. Group therapy will help the client gain support and develop a sense of universality. By attending groups, they may feel a sense of accountability that can help encourage their…
The Effects of Sexual Assault on Victims and Secondary Survivors Sexual assault is a very serious offence. Sexual assault may seem to affect only one person, the victim. However, sexual assault effects the family and social support networks of the victim, these people are called secondary survivors. From the moment the assault takes place thorough medical attention, therapy and in most cases, all the proceedings that come with laying charges and ensuing legal proceedings, the victim goes through a series of anguish and healing with the result of having the chance to never be fully healed. This essay discusses the effects of sexual assault on individuals and their family and social support network as a whole while emphasizing that sexual assault is a large and serious issue with serious impacts that are mental and physical.…
I would like to start off by thanking Angeley Marte for taking the time to let me interview her. This conversation was very difficult to discuss due to the fact that she had to speak on personal trauma which took effect on her career choice. Angeley is currently studying psychology at the Johnson and Wales Providence Downcity Campus, but she also wants to pursue a law career. Being raised in a very traditional Dominican home, her mother’s ideals were very different from others. When Angeley was around the age of seven she lived in an apartment with her mother and older brother in the Bronx.…
Group therapy helps almost everyone get their feelings out to other people in a safe and healthy way. It helps the school environment by helping the kids talk about how they are feeling about one another and what’s going on in the school. It could help the work environment the same way also. Another form of group therapy is family therapy. Family therapy, in my opinion, is very effective.…
Without considering both the process and content of the group, facilitators may miss important details that can help move the group forward in their growth as clients. For this reason, it is important that I recognize the role both play in the progression and success of group therapy so that I may be better able to serve my…
There are many kinds of research that has been shown to be effective with criminal offenders for correctional treatment. One such treatment is group counseling which is the one that most mental health professionals use and usually have anywhere between eight and ten prisoners and will have meetings many times per week. With group counseling it approaches behavioral and psychological contentions that interpose in many disorders and demeanors, for instance, substance abuse by advocating behavioral adjustment by means of communications with other people who also cope with the same contentions (Kupchik, 2007). Another treatment that is used is specialized groups which accommodates substance abuse, anger management, parenting, and many other kinds of issues. They have specialized groups for offenders that have inclusive concerns, for instance, anger management groups.…
The legal issue surrounding this heinous crime done to males can be complicated. To start off with police officers are usually the first responders and at time they can cause more harm than good. Officers are not at times properly trained for this kind of response and can be insensitive. Some officers when encountering a male victim they are usually in disbelief. In this moment, the victim has been denied a proper investigation, and the feelings of they deserved it or wanted begin.…
When you hear the words sexual abuse and rape, what pops into your head? An innocent, defenseless, woman or creepy looking man? While that version of events is the majority of cases, it is not all. Especially in my friend’s situation; my friend, a man, was sexually coerced by a women and was affected heavily. Men who have experienced any type of unconsented sexual act are negatively affected no matter their sexuality or gender of the perpetrator.…

Love’s Executioner Irvin Yalom, the author of Love’s Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy, is a book about ten different clients and their stories. In each chapter, Yalom discusses the time spent with each client in therapy. He uses this book to give people an insight into what he faced as a therapist. My purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the theories he used throughout the book, and point out a few of the times each theory was used.…
‘Sexual Assault and Depressive Symptoms in College Students: Do Psychological Needs Account for the Relationship?’ focuses on the correlation between fulfillment of basic psychological needs and how it affects the levels of depression of sexual assault victims in college students. Many studies in the past have found that the reason for higher depressive symptoms in college students was often connected to students with low satisfaction of their basic psychological needs, such as competence, autonomy, and relatedness (Chang, et al., 2015). With this previous information in mind Edward Chang, et al., wanted to figure out how basic psychological needs play a role in connection with depression of sexual assault victims. They hypothesized that low…
The Mental Health of Men Introduction Throughout history, men have been seen as superior in all ways to women, and this harmful stereotype still plays a role in today’s society. However, it wasn’t until recent times that the idea of mental disorders and health has been feminized and men’s mental health has largely been ignored (1). When referring to mental disorders and health, this is an encompassing term that refers to both affective and behavioral disorders that are patterned in both men and women (1). Although there has been some debate throughout history about empirical mental differences between men and women, it is proven that both sexes are capable of being diagnosed with the same mental disorders. Male and female victims…
Adlerian Therapy I personally would prefer to use the Adlerian style of counseling in my practice. I believe that this theory takes the whole person into account, and not just the problem(s) at hand. I think it is fantastic that this type of therapy makes sure that the client’s physical needs are met (place to sleep, food, and social support) before delving into deeper subjects, because if the client does not know where they are going to sleep tonight it is going to be hard to focus on what the client initially came to therapy for. I also believe that personal goals are an important part of the therapeutic process. If the client does not know what they wish to achieve in counseling the sessions might become unproductive.…
It is unclear in this case if the counselor obtained consent to share information with the father or the extent to which information was allowed to be shared. The client has the right to place limits of the amount of confidential information she wants shared with her father (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2008). If consent was obtained, the counselor did not breach confidentiality by sharing information with the father, however, she acted unethically by not considering how this accusation could harm the father, who was also her client. As her client, the father has the same rights as his daughter.…
