Paul narrates the story how the war was not a glamorous life and how horrifying it was to be living the life of a soldier in World War I. The horrors of the war had become much of a normal routine to him that when almost half of his company was killed with the same indifference, it represents his descriptions of horrific events in a detached and almost uncaring way. The other characters are also sharing this desensitisation. The soldiers which survived are more worried about whether they will get enough to eat than with the deaths of their friends and other soldiers. The cooks main concern isn't about the other 70 men which have been injured or killed but whether or not he should serve out the remaining rations to the remaining survivors.…

In of Mice and Men and All Quiet on the Western Front we see irony and important characters in each book that deliver this message. The two important characters of OMAM are George and Lennie Small. We already see irony here. Lennie is portrayed as a big huge man but, his last name is Small. In AQOTWF we have Kat and Paul who are similar to George and Lennie in too many ways to count.…

Paul suffered from these symptoms of PTSD, which include depression, avoiding thoughts related to the traumatic event and a feeling of detachment from his family (Ehrlich, Steven D., University of Maryland Medical Center). His disconnection from others was due to the fact that no one would understand what he had gone through and seen, which was millions of deaths. The War had impacted the happiness of his family, and thus it depressed him even more to discover that his mother has cancer. Being the soldier who fought for his own country greatly affected Paul’s mind because he was a relatively young man. Even though not all of Paul’s friends were young, they were all affected…

Upon his return, Paul revisits his childhood reminiscences of the town he grew up in; however, he is a foreigner to them and they are foreigners to him. He stands out in the crowd, but he is only a representation of the civilian's romantic and patriotic epitome; otherwise, he is nothing more but a "dirty and heavy laden" soldier. By portraying Paul’s weaknesses at home, Erich Maria Remarque conveys that due to the harsh experience on the front, Paul isolates himself from his childhood in order to accept the conditions of the front, making himself anxious to reconnect with his old home. When Paul arrives at the door of his house he becomes hesitant.…

War has forced a soldier to become detached, as he must always stay neutral in order to get through the battle. As the soldier observes innocent creatures being destroyed and watches death occur, he must not let this affect him as he has to block it out. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque uses horses and butterflies to represent how war forces soldiers to conceal their emotions, which protects him from the brutal experiences of war.…
