She found out that most of the parents were single mothers and they needed help in understanding immigration documents, bills, and school registration. Luma knew Arabic and French languages. So she was able to translate these documents and found help through the people she was getting to know in the resettlement community. Luma also handed out players her number so if they need help they can contact her. She received called frequently from their parents for help. Soon, the families started calling Luma for dinner. Luma found these appreciated and needed. Soon, she thought about it and found her goal in the life. All these years she was looking for the people who she could call family. She found her family in the refugee community. Later, she found out that the families had to go hungry sometimes because the food stamp money comes once every month. She worked at the Thriftown grocery store. Bill Mehlinger, owner of the Thriftown grocery store. His store was doing well until the refugee community started growing. The white people started moving out as refugee community started increasing in Clarkston. Mehlinger saw a gradual decrease in his sales. He fell behind on the payments. Hong spoke poor English, in spite of that her boss let her work there and gave her flexible hours. Hong was concerned about her boss. She came up with an idea. She states, “why don’t we have the opportunity for these people to get their food close by instead of far away?”(St.John pg 174). Mehlinger drove across the town and loaded up his truck with the food. He started stocking up food that refugee community needed. It was a great relief for refugees and Mehlinger. Mehlinger’s sales went up and he started making bank payments
