The respiratory system is responsible for taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. The lungs are the main organs in the respiratory system. According to the American Lung Association, red blood cells collect the oxygen from the lungs and carry it throughout the body where it is needed. As the red blood cells travel through the body, they collect the carbon dioxide, taking it back to the lungs where it is then exhaled.…
Carthage College was founded in 1847 as a private liberal arts institution in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Located directly on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan, It provides an idyllic location for higher education yet remains accessible from two major urban centers, Milwaukee and Chicago. The Carthage College Choir, founded in 1927, began as a small a capella group which exclusively performed sacred music. Now, nearly 90 years later, the choir is a celebrated component of Wisconsin’s cultural landscape and performs regularly in the area and in venues all over the world. In 2011, the choir held their debut concert in Carnegie Hall, a significant accomplishment which is largely due to their director, Dr. Eduardo García-Novelli.…
I’ve had the opportunity of completing my clinical rotation at Baptist Hospital with the medical team in which I've observed the different participants in the collaborative team and the specific role each person played. The team consists of physicians, surgeons, social worker, ARNP, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. While observing the team, the best outcome for the patient's treatment and prognosis is focused on before being discharged. For example, if the patient does not have insurance coverage, community resources are addressed to assist and provide the patient with the proper care post discharge. Learning how cares for patients that have been newly diagnosed with various neurological diseases as well as their long-term care…

Why Hopkins? I knew this conversation well, but each time it was marginally varied. Today the aroma of popcorn wafted my way as I sat at a table in Target. “We are moving to Baltimore this summer,” my dad said. Thus began another relocation experience, one that continued to foster my diverse interests.…
Being at the Phoenix Center today made me see how people’s attitude can affect a person. Patient’s in detox centers such as Phoenix have set schedules to abide by as part of their treatment plan. It is nesseccary for them to attend to these private and group meeting to help them stay on track. Many of them see these meeting as pointless and stupid but they are very beneficial to their progress. These patients are also grogy and tired as they are coming off of drugs and alcohol, and the medications they take also make them tired as well.…
It is not uncommon that patients are discharged early and return to the emergency room with symptoms of leakage after several days. The patient delay that is created has far-reaching consequences, with late leaks (>5 days) being associated with more complex treatment and adverse outcome. It is of upmost importance to treat this complication as early as possible, and thus establish an early diagnosis. Clinical observations could be of more importance in speeding up this process.…
1. When I started in college, I was unsure of what degree I wanted to get. One thing I know for sure is that I wanted to be in the medical field. I was choosing between ultrasound, radiology, nuclear med, and nursing. I tried thinking what are my possible chances of getting a job and chances of success in each place. I chose nursing which is a degree with a growing demand and greater opportunities.…
Therefore, upon graduation this May, I anticipate touring with the nationally renowned Crossman Drum and Bugle Corp. This will broaden my horizons and will enhance my music ability. Since my first formal band program in fifth grade, I have had a propensity for music. I plan to instill this passion in young people. I have auditioned with the band directors at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and secured a spot in their concert, marching, and jazz band.…
The short story, “A Story about the Body,” seems to be about how people look to other’s exterior appearances to love an individual, however that is not necessarily the case. Depending on whose lens one chooses to view the events through, there are many takes on the true meaning of the short story but personally the one take that seems true of both characters revolves around insecurities with physical bodies. “A Story about the Body” does truly give the reader much to mull over with regards to emotions and analysis of both the painter’s body and the composer’s reaction and behavior towards her body. Robert Hass transforms a simple, boy-likes-girl setting into a complex and sensitive situation in so few words. For example, the young…
I needed to see some new faces, a fresh start.” (Pg. 177) Within the completion of his senior year, James kept his grades up and found his true passion for music. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) images and spectra were obtained from various samples of silica and platinum on silica. Each sample contains unique structures which were prepared by etching the surface of silica in different conditions. A scanning electron microscope is a type of electron microscope that produces images of topography and composition by scanning a sample with a focused beam of electrons. Samples can be observed in high vacuum, low vacuum, in wet conditions, or at elevated temperatures.…
The beginning of my first semester at the University of Akron, has been a complete roller coaster. I have made friends, lost friends, dropped classes and of course, slept through classes. Being five hours away from my home in South Bend, Indiana has affected me more than I thought it would. I came into college thinking that I would make a ton of friends, get excellent grades and maybe even go to a few parties. I did not think that I would be close to almost dropping out of college as a whole.…
