Bedside vs. Non-bedside Reporting In the article “Implementing bedside shift report” by Coleen Ferris, she describes how her hospital successfully enforced the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative even though her nursing team originally resisted the change. She describes the process as a slow one and in the beginning even she was not convinced bedside reporting was a feasible change for the hospital. After doing thorough research on the subject, she came to the same conclusion many hospitals are coming to today; bedside reporting during shift change will improve communication with patients, families, and nurses while also helping to ensuring patient safety.…

Nurses felt they were obsessive over their fathers care, and often viewed them as an obstruction they would rather ignore. This family was always at the beside, taking notes of any changes noticed. Unlike some of the nurses, I used them as a source of information during my client assessments. To me, this family was a valuable tool that I could rely on when assessing and caring for this client. This negative attitude portrayed by a minority of nurses fosters the inability of health care providers…

For this week’s personal journal, I have decided to reflect on the article titled The Nature of Suffering and the Goals of Nursing (Ferrel & Coyle 2008). In this article, the authors discussed suffering and its effect on individuals at the later stages of their life. This article did a great job at explaining the toll suffering can take on patients as well as the role of the nurse in alleviating this suffering. It helped me, as a nursing student, recognize the importance of the future role I will have on patients and their comfort. The topics that they discussed such as the opening story regarding the mother/daughter teatime helped me envision what I would do in a situation similar to it.…

I would like to start this letter by addressing the fact that I admire your work and dedication of running a mental institution. I know it must be a difficult task, and you seem to be doing the best that you can. However, it has come to my attention that one of your nurses, Nurse Ratched, has been treating not only the patients poorly, but your employees poorly as well. As a monitor of local Mental Health Hospitals, it is my top priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those staying in each institution. The Nurse refers to these specific workers as “The Black Boys”, and I feel as if this is an injustice to them and the work they are called to perform.…
