Alice Oke is caught up trying to be like the old Alice Oke of the 17th century. Her life revolves around fulfilling the prophecy left by Nicholas Oke. Nicholas Oke’s prophecy left behind as told by Alice, was that when the “master of Okehurst should marry another Alice Oke, descended from himself and his wife, there should be an end of the Okes of Okehurst.”(Lee 134) considering Alice also states, “it seems to be coming true. We have no children”(Lee 134), “I have never wished for them”(Lee 134). This means that Alice has no intentions of ever having children with William Oke, the “master of Okehurst”, her husband.
