When bringing up the matter about Odysseus, Athena tells Zeus about his problem and how she wants to help him since he’s stranded on Calypso’s island. The reader may notice that Athena uses an emotional appeal when telling about Odysseus and how her “‘heart breaks for Odysseus’”(1.57). Athena emphasizes how much Odysseus wants to go home and states that he “‘longs to die’”(1.71). This creates sympathy towards the audience and Zeus which proceeds to planning Odysseus’ journey home.

While directing the blame towards Penelope, Antinous also brings up how for three years she led them on with “‘her latest masterpiece of guile’” and had brought their hopes up thinking they would have a chance of marrying her (2.101). She was to weave a shroud but would undo her work at night. With this devised plan, Penelope did not have to worry about having to marry one of the suitors. This shows how she is faithful and loyal because she wanted to wait for as long as possible to see if Odysseus would return home; she did not want to marry again since she only has eyes for Odysseus.

Once the omens were sent by Zeus, Halitherses stated that Odysseus is “‘somewhere near… breeding bloody death for all these suitors’”(2.184-185). Halitherses foreshadows that Odysseus is doing well. This reveals that the audience now knows that in the future Odysseus will return and the bloody death of the suitors will be expected as well.
