Even though Odysseus has, returned to his home almost no one knows it is him because he is disguised as a beggar. There is one one creature that recognizes him, which is his dog Argos. Argos was trained by Odysseus as a puppy, but when Odysseus left to go fight the Trojan war, Argos was taken in by another owner who often enjoyed taking him on hunting trips. Unfortunately, Argos’s second owner never made it home, so Argos was left to fend for himself. Although Argos eventually did make it home, it didn’t make much of a difference. Penelope’s servants and maids didn’t care for Argos at all, especially since Odysseus wasn’t there to tell them what to do. After almost 20 years of being away from Argos, …show more content…
Reality, because all the suitors and everyone else who sees Odysseus thinks he is just a beggar because he is in disguise and they continue to taunt him and treat him as if he was less of a person than they were. On the other hand, Odysseus’s dog Argos knows the real Odysseus and even though he has a disguise on, Argos can still tell from the sound of his voice that this beggar was in fact Odysseus.

Connection - Book #17 v.s. A Dog’s Purpose
In the Film, A Dog’s Purpose, directed by Lasse Hallström, a special bond is shown between Ethan and his one of a kind dog Bailey. Ethan and Bailey grew grew up together and spent almost all of Ethan’s childhood stuck hip to hip. Eventually Bailey’s time came and he was sent into a new life. The movie shows Bailey in 4 different lives, but in his fourth he finally finds his original boy, Ethan. This reminded me of how Odysseus and Argos were really close when Argos was young, but when Odysseus leaves, Argos is left to spend his life with someone else. Recognition Scenes in the Odyssey While there are many sections in the Odyssey that fall under the category of “moments of recognition,” there seems to be a general structure to each scene. At first Odysseus tests the person’s loyalty by listening to them and determining whether they hold sympathetic views towards the suitors and whether they wanted him to return home. The next phase involves deception in which Odysseus tells a tale to conceal his true identity.…

As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” What makes a hero? To be known as a hero is one thing, but what is a true hero? Well, it depends on whom you ask. To some, a hero might just be a person who is courageous and brave.…

Well, not really… all a person needs is-loyalty in his or her heart, and that’s exactly what Penelope and the servants possess. Penelope-the wife of Odysseus- sits in her room weeping for what seems like an eternity; she constantly hears of news that her husband is alive or that he is dead on some forgotten island. However, she is not quick to act on any news she receives. She remains optimistic and faithful, even though she has a house full of arrogant young men wanting to take her hand in marriage or to bed. In today’s standards, this mostly likely would not have occurred.…

What if the person one looks up to or longs to return is not the person they expect that person to be? In the Odyssey, by Homer, this is the case for Odysseus. He is not the man everyone thinks he is. To begin with, the epic the Odyssey is about the return of the “great” king of Ithaka, Odysseus, from the Trojan War. He spends ten years fighting the war and is now on his way home where he is creating tension that is prolonging his return to Ithaka.…

Throughout this voyage, Odysseus constantly speaks and thinks of returning home to Penelope and their son Telemachus, a thought that allows him to persist through all odds for twenty years. Odysseus’ absence from his household has left it unprotected and vulnerable to forces that might ruin its integrity, a great fear that makes his need to return home so urgent and strong, as Odysseus describes: “‘Yet, it is true, each day I long for the sight of home. If any god has marked me out again for shipwreck, my tough heart can undergo it. What hardship have I not long since endured at sea, in battle! Let the trial come’”(V.228-33).…

Odysseus says, “’I wanted to see [the Cyclops] and claim the stranger’s gift… So we lit a fire and made our thank-offering, and helped ourselves to as many cheeses as we wanted to eat; then we sat inside till he should come back with his flocks’” (111). Odysseus is impulsive and does not think before he acts. He is very selfish and only wants to see what glory the Cyclops gives him. He expects everyone to bow down to him, let alone know who he is, contrasting Odysseus when he fights the suitors at the end of the story and receives glory from his city. When Polyphemus, the Cyclops who happens to be Poseidon’s son, returns home, he traps Odysseus and his crew in his cave.…

When Odysseus arrives back in Ithaca he was disguised as a beggar to test his wife Penelope’s loyalty to him, and to make sure he does not get killed by the suitors that have taken over his estate. His appearance is that of a dirty beggar, and he appears homeless and rough. While this was also true when he appeared at the island of the Phaeacians, he had Athena’s spell and dream to make his arrival more convincing. On the other hand, Eumaeus decided to take in Odysseus without any hesitation despite his appearance. When odysseus first arrives in his house, Eumaeus follows the same custom as Nausicaa and says, “Come to the cabin.…

If his wife had pulled that, she probably would not be alive. Odysseus’s actions are hypocritical because Penelope herself represents the idea of “home.” Throughout his grand journey, the only goal is to return home, which is presented as the whole city and house and wife and son. Penelope is really the only important guiding factor to Odysseus—even while cheating with Circe he speaks of his love for his wife. The journey traveled in The Odyssey is both physical and mental, somehow strengthening the relationship between Odysseus and Penelope.…

Odysseus custom makes the identity of the beggar to use the Suitors’ hubris against them by making himself appear non-threatening to their pursuit of his wife. By underestimating the beggar, they have doomed themselves by allowing Odysseus to plan how he can take the Suitors by storm and take back his home. In another adventure, Odysseus uses a similar tactic to dupe Polyphemus the Cyclops into underestimating him by showing himself as a helpless shipwrecked sailor, allowing him the time to plan his escape (14.251). Odysseus benefits himself by tricking those he meets into thinking he is weak and using their false sense of security to his advantage.
