Introduction
In Luke2:1-20, we are told the “Nativity story,” or the story in which Jesus is born. The story starts out stating that Augustus has required a registration of all the people.1 This is the first registration while Quirinus was governor of Syria.2 Each then went to their own town to be registered, including Joseph. Joseph traveled with Mary, who was with child, up to the city of David, Bethlehem. While they were in Bethlehem Mary gave birth to her firstborn son, and she laid him in the manger because there was no place for them in the inn.7 In the same region there were shepherds keeping watch over their flock.8 An angel appeared to the shepherds saying 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, who is Christ the lord. 13And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and

In Luke 1, during the announcement to Mary it is told that she is a virgin. Many, Including Mary herself, ask how this act would be possible. 35The angel answered Mary, “the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy-the son of God. 36And behold, your relative Elisabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with

In A God of Incredible Surprises by Virgilio Elizondo, who is the leading Latino theologian in the United States today, we get to witness his thoughts about Jesus’s life on earth. Elizondo introduces some very intriguing thoughts on the birth of Jesus, and what all that could mean for humanity. For instance, “… in the Apostle’s Creed: He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary” (Elizondo, 2003, 22). After this, Elizondo makes a very interesting point come to mind by asking why Jesus should be conceived by the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was announced as the Messiah, there were so many different views of what he was to accomplish within the culture. Many expect a conquering king, a deliverer from the Roman empire but Jesus actions did not line up with their views. To help the new Christian believer, the writers of Luke and Matthew offer their perspective of what the Messiah and the Kingdom of God represented. In Luke 1:46-55, the evangelist emphasizes the song of Mary, the Magnificat, to detail the mind of Mary, the mother of Jesus and to paint his picture of the Messiah. According to Matthew 3:1-12, the writer conscripts the thoughts and sayings of John the Baptist to direct his audience’s attention toward John’s preaching of “the Kingdom of God” to create his viewpoint.…

The Broader Context: The Gospel of Luke In order to best understand how to properly interpret Luke 16:1-13, it is best to first read the passage in light of its surrounding context—the entire book of Luke. In his introduction, Luke clearly states his purpose in writing this gospel: “so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught,” (Luke 1:4). This is Luke 's purpose statement, but what is the truth the Luke is trying to demonstrate? The main theme Luke wants to convey, this “exact truth,” in his gospel is that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messianic Servant to all humankind.…

“The announcement of the birth of this newborn king of the Jews greatly troubles not only King Herod but all Jerusalem” (Matthew 2:1-3), yet the Gentile Maji are overjoyed to find him and offer him their homage and gifts (Matthew 2:10-11). This explains how the ultimate rejection Jesus faces from his own people but gains acceptance from the Gentile nations. Jesus must escape the murderous plans of Herod and escape to Egypt where he will relive the Exodus experience in Israel. The angel of the lord appeared in Josephs dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you (Matthew 2:13). Status referred to the social positions that women could obtain within a population whilst their function related to the roles which they can be attributed to, such as administrative or maternal roles. Coincidentally, the main female figures in the Gospel of Matthew also have their roles implied and this suggests their social standings within their community. The consistent mention of the two women named ‘Mary’ in the Gospel suggests their function throughout Jesus’s life and the growth of his movement. In numerous occasions, women are associated with the role of being a mother of certain children, namely Jesus (New Oxford Bible, Matthew 2:11). The importance of this role is frequently implied, such as when Joseph is specifically instructed by an angel to take his child (Jesus) and wife (Mary) and flee to Egypt and later to Israel (2:14).…
