Summary Of Nacirema

Initially, after reading about Nacirema, I felt shocked by the rituals and ceremonies the people did, because of the magic driven forces that are the norms of the society. The diction used in the article emphasizes the ceremonies and rituals, because of the many steps. Nonetheless, I could not surpass the wickedness of Nacirema, with the emphasis of the shrine and potions, the article illustrates Nacirema as a place, no one wants to live in, but actually exist. However, I believe that the author is smart for naming the society Nacirema as American spelt backwards because it allows the reader to understand, the importance of the ceremonies and rituals in to the society, that shape the human being. However, I question why certain cultures do

Body Ritual Among The Nacirema Analysis I believe that the Nacirema practice magical beliefs because they believe that the human body isn’t strong enough on it’s own, and can help it, by using magic to achieve it. They continue to practice it because it is their tradition, and has been apart of their culture for countless years. The overall, “the fundamental belief underlying the whole system appears to be that the human body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease.” Due to the fact that humans are susceptible to sickness, the Nacirema believe that with these potions they have created they can ward off demons and sickness.…

My first reaction to the reading of Body Ritual among the Nacirema by Horace Miner: it was an eye-opening reading experience. I was unaware that this level of primitive magic was still practiced in North America. This group of people do things that have been unheard of in North America and Europe for centuries. Some of the things the Medicine men do make very little sense from a medical stand point. If the treatment is harsher than the disease that has been contracted, is it worth the treatment?…

Nevertheless, anthropologists have once again identified yet another custom of Nacirema that will leave people’s minds boggled. (list at least 3) • In the American Cultural Configuration, Holmes emphasizes that American society is a culture full of fallacies and paradoxes in American logic. Some headings state a topic on how Americans believe in one way, but in reality, perform the opposite. For example, the paradox of education in America would be that while we value practical majors such as law, medicine, business, etc., they don’t really have the motivation to obtain it.…

An article that helps as a guide to understanding culture from different perspectives is the article Body Ritual Among the Nacirema by Miner (1956). In this article, he describes the culture and practices of the Nacirema, which is American spelled backwards. Native Americans as a whole are often stigmatized in the US and as a result fall behind in many aspects of social life, most notably in education. This inequality in educational advancement can be easily attributed to the vast differences in culture, social status, social class, roles, groups and social institutions of the many NA tribes in the US. Native American cultures are a very tight knit and exclusionary institution, often keeping most of their traditional practices such as the Sun Dance behind closed…

In relation to sociology, every society form rituals and ceremonies based on the beliefs. This is clearly portrayed in the writing as the Nacirema society focuses on the human body, appearance, and health, which resulted to the body rituals they perform every day. For instance, they see the ‘holy-mouth-men’ and perform rituals such as using a small bundle of hog hairs and scraping the face. Although this may seem normal to Americans, it isn’t for some culture. Being born outside of America, I could stand attest of this statement.…
