Summary Of Mitch Albom's Tuesdays With Morrie

In the memoir Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom ,Mitch reunites with his old college professor named Morrie Schwartz who he has lost touch with for at least 15 years. When Mitch first sees Morrie, Morrie tells Mitch that he was recently diagnosed with a disease called ALS aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS a disease that slowly deteriorates the body. Morrie knew that he did not have long before his body started failing him. Every Tuesday Mitch goes to Morrie’s house to participate in a class that only he is enrolled in. Each Tuesday they talk about topics,for example feeling sorry for yourself. Since Morrie knows that he will soon die he decides to make a conscious effort to approach this in a positive way. One example this shows is that Morrie agreed to sit down and complete a breif interview with ABC News Nightline’s own Ted Koppel. In the interview when Ted asks Morrie how he is approching his battle with ALS,Morrie tells Ted that “When all of this started, I asked myself, Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live? I decided that im going to live-or at least try to live the way i want, with dignity, with courage with humor and with compouser. So far ive been able to do it. Will i be able to continue? I dont know. But im betting on myself that i will.”" (Albom 57) The quote that goes along well with this is that "As you grow old, you learn more. If you stayed at twenty-two, you'd always be as ignorant as you were at twenty-two. Aging is not just decay, you know. It's growth. It's more than the negative that you're going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand you're going to die, and that you live a better life because of it” (Albom 57).
