Summary Of Millicent's Initiation

Initiation is a story of personal acceptance, and human versus human. Millicent discovers she, as a person is more important than who she is by societal standards. When the story begins she seems to be codependant on others thoughts and opinions of her, that slowly changes as she has some different experiences. Understandably a teenager would want acceptance but she starts to realize she shouldn't need a label for people to like her. There were instances where Millicent's mind started to change about things, starting with the sorority not choosing her friend Tracy because of her attire. The old guy on the bus with his crazy story and Herb Dalton talking to her, made her think about her own initiation. Tracy was one of Millicent’s bestfriends, so it was a surprise when she wasn’t recruited to be in the sorority. When Millicent asked why she wasn’t asked to join she got the response that Tracy was “Just a little bit different”. I feel like that helped to make her decision that she deserved better and didn’t need people to accept her, when they wouldn’t accept other people like Tracy. Just because she wore knee socks and an old backpack, Millicent knew she shouldn't be left behind. Herb Dalton, one of the most popular kids finally talked to her when she was being initiated. When people strive to be approved by others, that is where they lose themselves. It is hard in life to not feel the need to be wanted, but for her she realized that and it helped her to gain resilience for the future. Millicent wanted to change herself so she could be a better person for someone else. It took a group of mean girls, an initiation, her best friend, a popular kid, and a random guy on the public bus to realize that, but she did. For me personally, Millicents experience helped me realize that we don't need to be defined by a label and we can be our own
