Author Mary Douglas a British anthropologist questions in her journal ‘Deciphering a Meal’ that “if food is code, where is the precoded message?” She explains to us that if food is treated as a code the messages it encodes will be found in the daily patterns of social relations being expressed. “The message is about different degrees of hierarchy, inclusion and exclusion, boundaries and transaction across the boundaries.” Furthermore, she disagrees with Claude Levi Strauss’s theory from the book The Raw and the cooked. She believes that Strauss “leave of the small scale social relations which generate the codification and are sustained by it.” She believe that he is obtaining ideas from “rarefied space where he expects to find universal food
