In the passage “What Has Happened Here” Elsa Barkley Brown believes that women’s history should be inclusive of gender, race, and culture as these have important significance in shaping outcomes and society perspective. She talks about how historians like to “isolate one conversation” (297) to explore them to tailor its dialogue to fit different narratives. This however in turn loses significant facts that should not be left out when shaping the details. Barkley is adamant about the importance of Anita Hill’s race in the testimony of the sexual harassment case. Thinking that in order to make the public more sympathetic and keep the case simplified they should focus strictly on the sexual harassment of a women by a man.…
The Eyes of the Ocean The sea, a luminous gray, spills across the bottom of the picture. The brooding sky, like an echo of the sea, spreads itself across the top portion of the photograph. Between the two of them, a town huddles in shadow. The viewer finds herself unable to look away from the photograph.…
When you sit back and think about life, there are many similarities that you have with others. This is something that you may not know until you talk with someone or read a book. Puppy’s Find by Heather Payer-Smith is the first wordless picture book I chose to evaluate. The book has a sequentially organized plot that provides a framework for children who are just developing their own organizational skills. The book walks the reader through a dog going outside to berry a bone and come back inside the house. The depth of detail is appropriate for the level of children it is simple pictures with lots of colors to catch the child’s attention. If the child is a pet owner, then they would have enough experiential background to understand and interpret the illustrations on their own.…
All members of society are incorporated or affiliated with some type of institution whether formal or informal in their lifetime that has the potential to influence them. Whether it be the educational institutions they experience in their young adult life or the family household they have grown up there whole life to, it is evident the amount of significance institutions have in influencing one’s beliefs and moralities throughout life. In Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel”, the author explores a specific male only educational institution known as the Citadel and the repercussion that come with attending a male segregated institution. In Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context”, the writer highlights the amount of strength one’s environment…
Throughout this all-encompassing novel, Joseph J. Ellis is depicting what truly happened in prominent political events rather than the common ideas. He extensively goes into great depths rather than merely scraping the surface of these phenomenal affairs. Specifically, he elaborates on events such as the Duel between Hamilton and Burr, The Compromise of 1790, the plague of slavery, George Washington 's presidency, and the rocky friendship between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It is more than apparent that Ellis wrote this novel to provide great insight as to what really occurred on some of the most monumental days of American History. On a July morning of 1804, renowned politicians Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton met near the modern-day…

Secret History was written by Mary Hassal in a series of letters to her Uncle, who was the Vice-President of the United States. The letters are her observations of what life was like in the Caribbean and in particularly, they were about the nobility and the women in St. Domingue. The letters sent from Hassal to her Uncle appear to be letters that allow the government in the United States to keep track of what is going on in the Caribbean. Because of this, it can be inferred that she is a spy from the U.S. even though she may not know it. Her observations are about what life is like for the Creoles, and non-Creoles, the positions of women in society, and what life was like in the urban areas and in the rural areas.…
Robert Stepto’s From Behind the Veil: A Study of Afro-American Narrative (1979) provides a thorough analysis of canonical texts across multiple generations of African-American literature, including, but not limited to, the works of: Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, and Richard Wright. His analysis, which serves as the foundation for scholars of African-American literature such as Lawrence Rodgers and Farah Jasmine Griffin, provides insight to the narratives of personal quests for freedom and literacy, the conventions of the migration novel, and the cultural and social significance of the genre in relation to African-American literature. Stepto establishes a timeline that chronicles the evolution of African-American narrative structures,…
The following is from Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, Winnemucca wrote her book Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims in 1882. Winnemucca wrote this book to help highlight stories of her people and the interactions they had with white European and American settlers. Winnemucca hoped her writings would have the desired outcome of forcing change and getting public opinion and government officials on the sides of Native American tribes. Winnemucca portrayed cross-cultural interaction as inevitable. Nevertheless early interactions with white settlers and pioneers set the tone for all the following years of Winnemucca’s life.…
Over time, women have struggled to free themselves of systematic oppression that prevents them from achieving and succeeding in society. In the poem “It’s a Woman’s World”, Eavan Boland is an examination on the status of women in society. The title, which is an allusion to the James Brown song “It’s a Man’s World”, suggests that Boland believes that women are superior to men regarding status in society. However, the content of the poem promptly proceeds to contradict the title. Throughout Boland’s poem, the speaker reveals that in a “woman’s world”, women are overlooked and their status remains unchanged in the community.…
