The Conch(pronounced: conk) represents our law and civilization and our voice of reason often held by Piggy. Piggy, Jack, and Ralph all try to diffuse the idea of the “beast” unsuccessfully. Eric and Sam fall asleep at the fire and wake to find the dead paratrooper, and mistake it for the beast. Ralph feels the need to “stop” the beast and get back to the fire. Jack continues his pig hunts, and the boys start to lose order and discipline. Jack decides that there is a beast and that Ralph should be removed from leadership. Jack leaves to create his own society(of savages) while Ralph and Piggy decide to create a new signal fire. The Beast is representing their shadow selves which lurks within them.
