Alan Stuart Franken, better known as ‘Al’ was born on May 21st, 1951 in New York City, and graduated Harvard University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts with a cum laude degree in government (Biography). This degree is one of many qualifications which Franken has that validates his expertise to discuss the subjects in his book Lies and the Lying Liars That Tell them. Franken began his comedic career as an entertainer and writer for Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980, and later became a producer of the show upon returning in 1985 (Biography). His widespread popularity won him four Emmy Awards and landed him a spot as an anchorman for Comedy Central, where he covered the presidential election of 1992. Throughout the next fifteen years, Franken …show more content…
He titles his second chapter Ann Coulter: Nutcase which points out several faults and inaccuracies in her book, Scandal. Additionally, Franken mentions how Coulter lies about her age on either her Connecticut driver’s license which says that she was born in 1961, or her Washington DC license which states that she was born on 1963. She claims that the younger license carries the correct date, which means that she voted underage as a sixteen year old. Franken’s point is not to call her out on a two year age difference, but to highlight the fact that she has fake information documented on a government ID, a felony under the US Patriot Act; and further suggest possible paralleling behavior (Franken 8). Coulter is also called out for not fact checking and mistakened liberal, Evan Thomas of being related to Norman Thomas; who she states ran for president four times when he in fact ran for six, information that would have been beneficial to her argument had it been true that he was the son of Norman. Franken states that a “simple phone call” could prevent this issue and continued to include a run down of his phone call to mr.evan thomas to prove his point-- his father is not norman

What is an argument? Fineman describes it as a clash between at least two people or parties over facts and ideas and in the search of answers. I think what makes Howard Fineman, in particular, required to make these arguments is the fact that he has reported on every presidential campaign and major candidate since 1983; as well as traveling in and writing about over 40 country and every state in the U.S. except North Dakota. Throughout all of his travels and all of his reports about politics here in the states Fineman has learned so much about the ins and the outs of how our country operates. I would imagine one would challenge his qualifications by stating that he never actually held any political offices so he would not know “everything”.…

Thomas Frank in the essay, Commodify Your Dissent, argues that American culture has become dependent on rebellion. Frank supports his argument by illustrating the social norms in America during the 1950s with the suburban correctness. For example, he discusses how society respected authority, a mass majority of people attended church, and sexual repression (Frank 152). Then Frank dives into the social rebellion following countercultural ideas. Thomas quotes Jerry Rubin stating “Amerika says: Don’t!…
