Discuss the Writer’s Main contention and tone ( in your answer you should identify the type of text, the significance of the author, the context in which the text is created/published, the authors main contention and who they wish to persuade ‘Time To Attack Graffiti’ which was published on January 21st of 2002 and written by Leonie Burke who is the opposition spokesperson for the local Bracks Government and a member of the legislative Assembly for Prahran. This gives gives her the position to try and do something about graffiti and why she thinks it is a problem. This already tells us that she has a strong opinion. We understand that she is against graffiti and does not like it at all. She also uses over exaggerated words such as ‘vicious attack’ and ‘sick’. The word ‘sick’ that she uses doesn’t actually mean she is sick but she is fed up with the graffiti and the crimes these people are committing. She uses the word repetitively which emphasis her anger and frustration. This is a way she uses her opinion in her own words and tries to make the reader understand her point, she is also attacking the criminals that commit this crime. This influences us in a way that makes us think that this problem is wrong and we should consider the consequents. Leonie states that this vandalism was affected by many businesses, homes and public structures. She was part of this strategy that the government and councils tried but this failed as it did not stop these criminals. As she says “artistic” she does not think that graffiti is artistic at all, she says ‘we all know the difference between pure graffiti art and vandalism’ this is true in many ways as some people mistaken graffiti for art when really its breaking the law. This persuades us that what these people are doing even to this day is a crime they are committing and everyone needs to work together to make it
