After reading and reviewing information on Sarah Good I was able to create a portrait of her that represents her as she is described in history. In many excerpts of Sarah Good she is described as being “filthy” or even as an “old hag” so, I portrayed Good with flies flying around her, scruff marks, as well as a wrinkled forehead. Because Good and her family were said to be poor and beggars, she is wearing a simple dress. I have also included a symbol of hands begging for bread to represent this. Another description of Good said that she lived detached from society.…

His mom understood the oppression that blacks had to endure in order be alive and not killed by whites. For instance, Richard’s uncle Hoskins was killed just because his salon was doing well and the white men got jealous. To explain his own perception of skin color more clearly, he quoted: “But the color of a Negro’s skin makes him easily recognizable, makes him suspect, coverts him into a defenseless target.” (Wright 28). Jim Crow laws officially segregated blacks from whites in any physical contacts.…

I see a reflection of myself when analyzing the character Lena Tiddle, from Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Although Lena lives in a dystopian society while I do not, we run parallel with many traits that we each inhabit, socially and mentally. First of all, mentally we are both slightly fearful. While the mental fear that I hold is not as extreme as the fear Lena holds, it is a trait that bonds the two of us. Lena’s mental fearfulness is exemplified through her need to constantly feel protected and shielded from things outside of her comfort zone.…

Susan Glaspell is an American Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who composed the play “Trifles” in 1916. The play was centered around the death of Mr. Wright who was strangled to death with a rope in his farmhouse. As Mr. Hale, Mr. Peters, and the county attorney seek to find evidence to convict Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters utilize what the men refer to as “trifles” to conduct an investigation while packing necessities to keep Mrs. Wright company while she is in jail. From my interpretation, “Trifles” portrays how women and men utilize their brains in different ways. Men were portrayed as blocking out unrelated information and distractions that could potentially lead to an undiscovered motive to solving the crime.…
