Culture is a highly significant aspect to consider in the new landscape design. The Nguyen family is ethnically Chinese, but culturally Vietnamese. In addition, Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen are both Vietnamese immigrants who strongly hold onto their heritage. This provides an explanation as to why the garden…
On November 1st, I attended the design matters lecture with Juliane Wolf. In the lecture, Wolf argued about the issues with the Chicago river and other areas in Chicago to show how it impacts the citizens of the area. She brings up former environmental issues that contribute to the argument. Firmitas, representing the structure related to the building along the river and man-made peninsula on the lakefront in Chicago. Venustas, representing the beauty, displays how Wolf wanted to bring out the good in the Chicago area.…
Introduction Australia has some of the worlds most diverse and unique ecosystems, these are constantly under threat from both human impacts and natural processes. I believe that to protect our native species we need to attract people to our National parks, one example of this is Kings Park a state icon in Western Australia with over 13,000 different species located and protected on its grounds. The problem with Kings Park is that it doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. I think by building biomes and other interesting Architectural wonders, we can create artificial ecosystems too hold an even larger variety of flora from all the different ecosystems around Australia and the world. These new buildings serves the purpose of showcasing Australia’s…
Excursion Assignment Over time the city of Toronto has constantly expanding and redeveloping. The result of redevelopment and expansion is change is change is styles of architecture. This can be seen in the location of houses in Toronto, and in a smaller community such as the Ryerson campus.…
Lewis Mumford Although Lewis Mumford is not mentioned in this week’s reading assignment, his understanding of city design and the conflict which might arise when poor planning is engaged shines through in various sections in the text. Through most of Mumford’s writings, his criticism towards modern man’s lifestyle is evident. From the transformation of the use of money as a commodity, the ever growing advancements in technology, to his thoughts on how new cities were growing out of control.”…
The hazy feeling of staying awake for an entire day settled in my body. As the early flickers of sunlight shone through the grand windows of the studio, I was able to look down at my work and appreciate the beauty of it. Perhaps it was the several shots of espresso, or the feeling of adrenaline but I was able to complete my first Architectural project. Just like most of my summer, I spent hours using my lead holder to perfect each line in my plans and sections and I sharpening my pencil much too often to make sure that each line was crisp and that my line weight was exceptional.…

Unfamiliar Nature David Ruy's practice explores the contemporary design problems at the intersection of architecture, nature, and technology. In this essay ‘Returning to (Strange) Object,’ Ruy talks about his position towards nature as an architect. The essay advocates for the diminishing role of the architect and also that the architects desire to establish its roots outside its scope is leading to irreversible self-inflicting damage to its authority. To do so, the author first presents our current notion of the nature as the ultimate milieu. For the architect, nature has always been an inspiration and also a force that challenges its limitation.…
The Merriam-Webster definition of wilderness certainly defines the important distinction between affected and unaffected geographical areas in the Canadian environment. Sincalir’s (2016) article defines the problem of biased wilderness preservation policies when it comes to extraction of natural resources from differing regions of Canada. In fact, there are many instances when the regulation of the ecosystem is diverted in order to give cart blanche to resource extraction corporations’ massive leeway to take natural resources without the same oversight as national parks or preserved areas. This is part of the separation of certain areas of land management policies, which divert attention from the problem of pollution and the destruction of…
Introduction What is nature? On the surface, this might appear to be a very simple question, but it is actually very complex. Indeed, each person has their own concept of nature, and these concepts influence how we interact with the environment. Is nature something that is separate from society?…
“I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence. I wanted excitement and danger and to sacrifice myself for my love. I felt in myself a superabundance of energy which no outlets in our quiet life”(15). This quote emphasizes that nature is essential to one’s existence. Nonetheless, making sacrifices for what you love is a true passion.…
These spaces, in being transitional, take people from “outside” and through the overlap of nature and building, transfer individuals to a destination defined as “inside.” In doing this, transitional space helps to ease architecture’s interaction with the natural environment, creating a relationship rather than a conflict”. This text also relates to the metro centre where the transition is abrupt and restrictive thus losing the connection or transition with the…
Ecological design is a major part of our coming future and is necessary for the prosperity of our species as caretakers for the world. Sim Van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan, in their book Ecological Design, address five principles in design that will help to move society in the right direction. These principles are: solutions from your place, ecological accounting, designing with nature, everyone is a designer, and making nature visible. It has been over the course of the last century that building designers and engineers have neglected the entirety of environmental impacts that went into their buildings. They have built, I believe, from a strictly human perspective with regard only to what the majority wants.…
Good design is complex and contradictory this is supported by the statement “less is a bore” and that less doesn 't mean more. By having less you lose the interesting aspects of complexity. Venturi points that the richness and complexity of modern experience needs to be expressed in our architecture. This is further supported by the statement that function doesn 't follow form and that ornaments are valuable for architecture. Ornaments in architecture have meaning, is intrinsically symbolic, and can be used to communicate ideas.…
I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
