“To Kill A Mockingbird” goes on in an imaginary small town called Maycomb County that is located in the southern parts of Alabama. This story takes place in the early 1930’s during the Great Depression that entitled unemployment and poverty that was constant throughout the United States at the time. Not much people leave or move into this friendly little town and the citizens of Maycomb don’t care much about anything that happens outside of the community that doesn’t involve them. “A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. Atticus is told by the judge to defend Tom because he seems to be the right fit for the job. The tone of To Kill A Mockingbird changes from chapter to chapter. There are times where the tone can be mostly light-hearted and filled humor like when Jem, Scout and Dill are gossiping about Boo Radley and his “infamous” murder stories. Then there are those times where it can shift to a more serious type like during the trial of Tom Robinson. But I think the overall tone is hope and promise for a better world in the future. One of the major themes that has earned its spot in the title of the book is “The Mockingbird.” When Jem and Scout are out in the backyard practicing shooting their air guns that they got for Christmas, they decided that instead of practicing on tin cans, they would shoot at living things, such as birds. They went to go ask Atticus if he would be okay with this and he said yes, under one condition, that they must never shoot at mockingbirds, because it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scout went to ask Miss Maudie (one of their neighbors) about the matter and she said,” Your father’s right, Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy, /they don’t eat up peoples gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their little hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Tom Robinson is one example of a "mockingbird". He is accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell, but is innocent of the charges.
