The story is written in Kenny Watson’s point of view. At the beginning, he introduces the rest of the Watson family huddled on the couch to keep warm. Kenny and his little sister, Joey, in the middle, Momma and Dad beside them, and his older brother Byron sitting separately like most teenagers. Byron is always getting into trouble. Momma, being from Birmingham, Alabama, always threatened to send him to his Grandmother’s down south. One day, Byron crossed the line by playing with fire in the upstairs bathroom. That was the day the Watson’s began planning a trip to Birmingham. When the Watson’s passed from the north to the south, they immediately saw a difference. They tried to check into a hotel room but were told they couldn’t stay there
