The documentary hypothesis ( Wellhausen hypothesis ) believes that the Torah or the five books of Moses was derived from originally independent, parallel and complete narrative, where it was combined into the current for by a number of editors. In an attempt to reconcile in the 18th and 19th century biblical scholars using sources eventually arrived at the theory that the Torah was composed together from several, each originally a complete and independent document . at the end the hypothesis developed slowly around the course of the 19th century and it was agreed that there were four main sources combined into one . …show more content…
The Jahwist source ( J ) was written between the years 850 – 750 BC in the southern kingdom of Judah and it is the oldest source and J describes a human-like God and J has an eloquent style .
The Elohist source ( E ) was written between the years of 850 – 750 BC in the northern kingdom of Israel where E parallels J, and E focuses on the Shiloh priesthood in the kingdom of Israel ( north )and has a moderately eloquent style and a strong prophetic influence, a great ethic character . the Deuteronomist ( D ) in the year of 622 BC under the kingdom of Josiah, appeared in Jerusalem in the period of religious reform the “ scroll of the law “, Wellhausen identified this book of the law with Dt
12-26 and assigned the letter D, and that is why the five books of Moses is restricted to the book od
Deuteronomy . even though it continues into the books of Joshua, Judges , Samuel and kings . it is very strong the purity and faithfulness to the cult of Yhwh .
The Priestly source ( P ) was written c. 500 BC by Priestly exilic and the redaction of this document
