On Thursday, October 19, I attended an event hosted by the John Dewey Society “Teacher as a Writer and Writer as a Teacher”. The guest speaker was Dr. Carol. Dr. Carol is a Professor at St. John’s University. He told us a little bit about his life and his career, before he became a teacher he was in the military. Dr. Carol spoke about some important points when becoming an educator. He stressed that it was important that we create a journal and document our daily life as an educator. This journal is a learning device for you to grow. By writing things down in the journal you would be able to look back at it and learn from your past experiences and see what needs improvement. They promote a safe writing environment allowing the student to feel safe and encouraged to write. The journals also help develop relationships with the teachers, the student tends to feel more comfortable as the year goes on and expresses themselves more. The article also talks about some unexpected benefits such as reinforcing what the students have learned and also improves the students grammar. The article also provides us with some example writing prompts, some prompts may be very specific and then others are broad and allow the student to express their ideas. The article focused on some important point on why writing journals are important and essential for all students.

One important topic that both Dr. Carol and the article discussed was that students will feel more comfortable when writing because it will be a constant activity and normal to the student. Dr. Carol opened my eyes to journal writing because I had never thought about that idea before. I definitely will be using this writing method in my classroom, I feel that it is very beneficial.
