Mrs. Harling is a woman of many things. One of her most remarkable lessons she teaches Jim to have respect for others. Mrs. Harling commended Jim on his graduation speech which he respectively dedicated to Mr. Shimerda. For instance, “I soon learned, if I were sent over on an errand and found Mrs. Harling playing the piano I must sit down and wait till she turned to me” (2.3.88).
